Here is British contract .455 Eley military proofed Colt Government Model pistol serial number W 100744. It was one of 400 pistols shipped to Captain Sir Connop Guthrie, Pier 60, North River NY NY on March 12, 1918. Guthrie was the Special Representative for the British Ministry of Shipping in the U.S. and a member of the U.S. Shipping Commission in 1918. It has the view mark for G.W.R. Steadman, British Inspector at the Colt New Haven Factory and the British Broad Arrow and Crossed Pennant military acceptance marks.

Unfortunately, it became common a good while back for sellers to replace the original magazines with .45 ACP magazines. The .45 mag will fit in the .455 pistol, but not the reverse (though the .45 magazine won't accept .455 Auto cartridges). Too many buyers didn't know the difference, and with the original mags bringing $200, the seller could get a "bonus" by selling the mag separately.

Yes, you're right. Many if not most of these pistols I've seen have replacement .45ACP barrels and magazines. Before I got some original WWI issue .455 Eley ammo I fired this pistol with a .45 ACP barrel and magazine and it worked fine, but now that I have the original .455 Eley ammo and also reloading supplies I'll try it out in this pistol with the orginal .455 Eley barrel and magazine.
