I have recently been given a 1941 mauser k98 by my dad. I love the gun, fires nice etc. Here's my question. The original stock peices (barrel end) have been removed, so there is nowhere to put a sling anymore. While I have everything else to the gun, I don't have the wooden peices. I have looked at some swivel kits but they all require drilling and screwing into the stock (which I would rather not do). Is there any other way (without damadging the gun) to put a sling on it?

It is all original (to the best of my knowledge) #s match, etc. from ID ing with info I got from this site, it has not been "re-worked" It doesn't have any markings showing that it was "imported". I don't own a digital camera, so it will be a while to post pictures.

Thanks for the info, Clark. which would be better for "preserving" the gun's condition? I am really new to all this. I have never taken a gun apart (completely) or anything. I usually just clean them (without breakdown) and bring them to a gun shop for the once a year complete cleaning. Not that I wouldn't be willing to learn though. It's more a matter of not owning a gun that I don't care to screw up. ;P I have only 2 guns. This one and a .35 Marlin Lever action. I'm not sur of the model info ar anything, I just shoot the gun lol. The Mauser is my baby, I just shot my first deer with it this weekend, It fits me like an old pair of shoes. As I said, before my dad got the gun, the wood was removed from it. I'm not interested in restoring it right now, but I don't want to damadge it so that I couldn't put the stuff back together ( I'd need to get the original bands for the stock to do that) I guess I should use the barrel band style unless there is a reason I shouldn't. I am very open to suggestions/info on this. Also, something else I noticed about the gun is the sights. All the pictures of 1941 k98's that I have found show it with a different sight setup. They usually show a "hooded" sight at the muzzell end and a flip-up adjustable sight just before the reciever. My gun has a "normal" sight at the muzzell end and an adjustable ring sight at the reciever. It is also mounted behind the reciever instead of in front. The serial numbers all match, so I suspect it is original (but not sure). Was this a common sight for infantry or was it a specialized one for sniper/SS? I'm just curious I have a thing for history.
