1980 Remington 742 30 06

My Father purchased a 742 in 1980 and had used it perhaps a half dozen times in total. It has been moved once in the last 18 years - when they moved. Can someone point me in the direction of a resource to determine its value? He would really just like to find a good home for it at a fair price. I have offered to assist in some up front leg work, but know absolutely nothing about rifles.

Any comments will be appreciated
 
Go to any hunting store and buy (or look through the pages) the Gun Trader guide.
Very comprehensive, full of info.
You can find it even at at Wal-Mart.
I recently bought a 740 in the same caliber and I saw lots of 742 for sale at gun shows and gun shops.
Depend on the conditions, around here in WA, asking price for a used 742 in '06 is between 220 and 350 (+- 20-25 if it has a cheap 3-9X 40 scope very common in this rifle).
Why sell it?? It is a gorgeaous rifle, I would keep it...much better than the overrated BAR.
