i have the opportunity to buy one of these unfired, in a box. I’ve tried to do some research on the build quality of this year, but I haven’t seen much. Any info would be appreciated.
One that vintage can go either direction. Some are nice, some are not. You need to be able to discern the difference. Teaching someone how to shop for a good Colt SAA is not easily accomplished in a quick forum post.
Colt screwed me over (I would like to use the F word but this is a public forum) big time. In 1996 I brought a new nickel plated 45 Colt.
I blew the nickel finish off of the cylinder the first time I shot in. Colt refinished it. Then the nickel plate started peeling off of the frame so another trip back to the factory.
Sent the gun to Bob Munden. He did a action job and return it with a test target with a large 5 shot group on it and "Your gun won't shoot worth a hoot" written on it.
I figured out the chambers were anywhere from .457 - .458". Sent the gun back to factory, they returned it untouched with a note saying it was within factory specs.
Only bullet that gave me any kind of group on paper is Remington lead bullet with hollow base. The skirt would expand enough to allow for a something that looked like a large group.
I fussed with this gun and considered getting a new cylinder custom made for it but I finally decided to cut my losses and sell it. It was a beautiful gun. Just a total piece of junk.
I would not mind owning another Colt SAA someday but I will not buy sight unseen and would probably choose a 2nd Generation one that has been shot so I can see the test target. (Yep I want a shooter). Colt management burned me badly and it is unlikely I will ever buy another new gun from them. (And I don't believe the current management has changed one bit).
