I have put some rounds down range with this gun now and the only complaint I have is with the magazine.

I have noticed that if I load the mag completely, the feed lips are not robust enough to hold back the spring tension. This causes the rear of the first round to rise and when cocking it will nosedive into the feed ramp.

if I load 6 I have no issues. 7 is a problem.

now the hunt for some better magazines.

I would contact RIA customer service.

I have shot several RIA Tactical models and friend's RIA Tactical to 10,000+ round count using factory RIA and CMC PowerMag/WC 47D without magazine issues, especially with lead SWC reloads.

Perhaps RIA sources different suppliers for magazines and you got a subpar magazine as ones I have used worked well.

RIA normally uses wither Mec Gar or Metalform for their OEM magazines. And I have never had any issues with either brand.

OP, what make/ model of magazine were you describing? I hope it wasn't the mag supplied with the RIA.

Is this a full size 1911, or a compact frame 1911?

Here is an article on nose dive https://americanhandgunner.com/gear/nosedive-and-feed-angle-in-the-1911-45-acp/

Usually, you if you load up your mags and let them sit fully loaded for several days, this problem goes away.

Good article!

basically sums up exactly what I saw.

Are you feeding the magazine all the way into the mag well? My RIA 1911 magazines fit further in than flush.

I’m going to call RIA first, since this a new full size.

it seems that this mag doesn’t even like to enter the well when fully loaded. I understand this is a common issue, but something is a bit off on this one.

May just need a follower upgrade. I used Wislon Combat followers in my "new mags for the same reason.

RIA CS is pretty good. They replaced a bad DS mag for my TCM pistol with no hassle.
I later fixed the bad mag (bottom metal base plate would not stay on) after some trial and error repair attempts.
Nothing but good experiences with RIA.

The ACT mag that came with my RIA 1911 still sits in the plastic gun case. It's never been used. Mags that I want are what the top competitors consider as reliable. For the Rock, I'm using 47D mags.

I tossed mine in the trash can and switched to CMC.
