Hey all- does anyone have any any info links or pics handy of 2,4,and 8 gauge shotguns?

I'd like to learn more.
Thanks!

.

I remember reading about a guy in england that still makes custom 2 and 4 bore guns. And I believe that 8 gauges are used in foundries to knock over the big smeltimg pots. I've seen 8 gauge shells (slugs) for sale in gun shows in NC, and that is what they said they were for.

I have a picture of a 4 guage next to a 12 gauge. The shell is from a friends H&H 4 bore double.

Here is pic of our 4 bore cases with 2000 gr bullets.
We make cases from 20 mm brass shown on the right,
and in pic is 06 for comparison. We are getting a run
of 4bore barrels hopefully done this summer.Ed

pauli--They won't fit on that. They start out as 2.5+ inch
blanks..He is using up lefover stock used to make
25mm Bradley barrels.he had to change tooling for
shallower rifling and slower rifling twist.i am going test mine
on a State arms big bolt action for load development.Ed.

They were used in the US way back when for market hunting. Many times they were mounted on a boat like a cannon.

Ducks would fly in, the shooter would fire and the ducks would fall. Of course many cripples would be lost, but the market hunters didn't care.

Thankfully these guns were eventually banned to use for any hunting.

saw a little thing on ShootingUSA, a program on OLN, in which the guy fired a 4 bore blackpowder. it was scary. after firing, he took 2-3 steps back while recovering from recoil.

would i shoot one? maybe. once.

A four bore (gauge) or an 8 bore (gauge) could be referring either to a rifle or shotgun. The British use the word "bore" where we usually use "gauge", for shotgun, but I think when the Americans use "bore" it usually means a rifle.

During the days of blackpowder, the only practical way to make a rifle more powerful after a certain point was reached was to make it bigger. I believe Samuel Baker and "Baby" were the epitome of big bore blackpowder rifles, "Baby" being a 4 bore rifle, and Baker obviously addicted to recoil.

I do not recall every hearing of a shoulder fired 4 gauge shotgun, but they may indeed exist. 8 gauge singles and double shotguns were made, but not very common.

8 gauge kiln guns and ammunition are manufactured to clean out kilns used in cement and steel processing, and can be seen here:

I wonder if they would sell 8 gauge ammunition to "ordinary" people, making the leap of faith that we all qualify as "ordinary".:neener:

hubel 458,

You could probably make a ton of money just selling the single cartridges to collectors. I know a certain boy in Nebraska who only desires a 4-bore rifle and something big enough to shoot with it, but alas, "Tremors" was just a movie...

BTW, where do you get your 20mm brass? I bought buckets of inert 20mm ammo to help raise money to get a WWII bomber out this way one time, it was cheaper than I thought it would be. I bought it at this place:

Bowfin--Yes got some cases from them.Nice lady.
The cost of 4bore is the work
converting and changing case.
London Guns made 4 bores,Ken Owen built some doubles.
Clayton Nelson built couple in overgrown falling
blocks, you can build one on a Borchardt falling block,
like the one 12GA FH is built on.There is bunch in
UK and Aus set up smoothbore for shot. Our 4bores
will be rifled ones.
But we are going to build and experiment with
a 2bore smoothbore, we got barrels from surplus, and are figuring out a ways to build actions.Ed.

STiTkacit--You don't buy it.In fact none of my creations
can be bought ready to go.We make them.
The 2 bore case we make from 27mm Nato Typhoon
aircraft cannon shells. It is steel, and our case
is 5 inches long, anda 1.225 inch bore.and that matches
surplus 30mm muzzle sections with rifling reamed out.
We will ream out rifling because it is too tall and
to fast of twist.Run it as smoothbore, use about
15 50cal lead balls for ultimate shot load.
Or a hollowbase cast bullet...Easy to work on and
convert case on the lathe. No more pressures than it will
need to get 20-25,000 ft lbs the case will never need
resizing on the bottom 2/3.Here ispic of case with
barrel and a mock up pivot block on barrel. In pic
is 4 bore case and 458Win for comparison.Ed.
