I've been planning for a while now to build an AR, I recently decided to make it a 20" gun instead of a 16" mid-length. That may present a little problem, though: since rifle uppers aren't as popular these days as middy and M4-style ones, I can't find pre-built uppers with barrel options I want, and I don't think I have the tools or know-how to build an upper on my own. I'm insisting on a pencil barrel, but BCM, my top choice so far, only offers government profile. Daniel Defense doesn't have anything with a rifle-length gas system, period.

So, here's what I'm looking for: a basic (can even come without handguards, as I'll be buying a set of MOE's) upper with a 20" pencil barrel, no frills. I don't really care that much if it's A1, A2, or A3, although I'd prefer it to not be A2 for easier sight adjustment. It doesn't even need a BCG, as I'll want one from Bravo Company anyway. And I'd like something with Tier 1 quality, or at least reasonably close. What are my options?

First, there isn't much difference from a government taper to a pencil barrel in weight.

Second, you would take A1 sights that require a bullet to move but not A2 because they aren't easy enough to adjust?

Third, those "tier 1" rifle makers have very little selection with longer than a 16" barrel. If you want something with top quality parts, pay a top quality gunsmith like ADCO firearms to install a blank of your choice onto a "tier 1" upper and have them profile it to your likings. Won't cost much if any more than what the top end charges and you will have a quality barrel in the exact profile you desire.
