20" vs. 22" Turkey Gun

If it were an auto, I'd recommend 22", but for a pump, 20" is fine as long as it has screw in chokes. It's been a while since I hunted turkey, we did it with our 30" Full duck and Trap guns.

Today I sighted in the red dot and patterned the only lead 20 Ga. turkey loads I’ve been able to find locally at the moment, Winchester Double X, 3”, #5. The target below is at 25 yards. This is with the factory X-Factor ported choke tube that came with the gun. Not bad but could be better. I have some Winchester Long Beard XR on order, so we’ll see how it does. Thoughts?

Barrel length matters little, patterns matter greatly. I patterned my Mossberg turkey gun with at least 30 turkey loads until I found the perfect combination ( Pure Gold turkey choke with Mag Blends). Lots of work but worth it.

My 26 and 23 inch 870.Supermagnums did decent w a variety of shells. All 3 inch. Superfull Remchoke.

Did OK w other xtra full and ported tubes from.MAD, HS and others ( coworker had a bunch ).

Seriously, the fairly cheap Superfull was the winner.
Winchester HV 4s was also the better load, but even those old duplex Remingtons did OK. All usable to 30 yards

Think the lead 4s got good killing to 40 yds energy wise.

Big Green had some bbls with less than properly machined choke tube areas, and impact could be off point of aim. My buddy got two 1187s new so afflicted. They were pathetic.

New or used, from seeing a few bad ones way back, i check everything. My 870.supermagnums ( had 3 of em ) have been perfect.

Farthest tom was killed at 42 yards.

Did pattern same gun ive run last 10.yrs w Magnum Blend and its fine.

Only problem there is wallet damage. LOL

My Turkey gun is a Single shot H&R single shot 12ga with a 28 inch modified choke with 2 3/4 , 6 shot
I hadn’t hunted in a years .. but I’ve never failed to get my bird …

Short bbls are nice when carrying slung in the thick stuff, don't bash as much overhead.
