.204 Ruger Question

Now i have had a .204r for a wee while now, and have had trouble with poor accuracy with the factory Hornady ammo. 32' & 40 v max's.

Its grouping between 1 1/2 and 2" @ 100 yards.
The rifle is a new tikka t3 varmint.

Now before anyone says it's the guy behind the trigger, i can manage .2" - .3" out of my .223.

Has any one else found that ammo a poor performer in their rifle?

float, trigger, bedding and you should be good to go.

my experience w/ v-max's is they is good stuff!

trigger is breaking under 2lb's, barrel comes fully floated. And my other tikkas never needed bedding as they all shot well under and inch @ 100 and 200.

I know handloading is the way to go but i just want to know if anyone has had the same problem with this?

I had a problem with copper fouling in my .204 CZ527 Varmint. Using some ammonia-based solvent will address the issue -- then you can mark it off your list as a possible contributor. Just remember to keep cleaning until there's no more "blue" on your patch.

Also, check your optics mounts.

And, try shooting off bags instead of that bipod -- at least to diagnose your accuracy challenge -- it's possible that the fore end is being pushed into contact with the barrel in an inconsistent shot-to-shot way.

Finally, your supressor / hider / whatever-that-is on the end of your barrel may be at fault. Try some rounds without.

Tikkas are generally very accurate; it's what we the shooter do to the rifle (i.e. hardware) that generally mucks things up!

get a powerful magnifying glass, and take a look at that muzzle. Especially if your groups have no real pattern, and appear to just be shotgunning downrange.
If you see a bunch of imperfection, recrown the muzzle; either do it yourself, or take to a 'smith to do it, for about 20 bucks.

One more thing, if you have a known good accurate rifle, take the scope off of it, and put it on this one.

Ya, make sure your scope doesn't have parallax issues.

Is that a suppressor? What barrel length? Take it off and see if the groups improve.

What about the barrel's crown?

I'm shooting the Hornady 32 and 40gr V-Max's out of an AR based 204, getting good repeatable groups.



I agree with the rest. Try bags vs. the pod, confirm the scope mount is solid, check the crown, wherever it's hidden. What is that thing anyway?

I doubt copper fouling is the problem. Good luck...

Have you tried other factory ammo? Some rifles hate some ammo. Sometimes there is a rhyme or reason related to twist rate, throat, or the like, sometimes there isn't

Sounds like a crown issue, or the old scope/rings/base issue. But sometimes they all make a dud.

i can manage .2" - .3" out of my .223.

May I ask how many shots are in each group?

re the .2 to .3" groups, it was 5 shots.

The big black thing is an overbarrel suppressor. i have had a few of these and they bring a full centrefire down to the sound level of a 22lr and less recoil. They have a built in stainless muzzle break to which helps greatly.

match cut crown.

off to try some different factory ammo now. fingers crossed. I will also try a rest and not the bipod.

Have tried different mounts and rings.

Hope to hell the new VX-III is not faulty, will try another scope if this ammo does not work.

I get 1/2 MOA out of my AR based .204 with the same ammo. I would suspect the rifle/surpressor combination.

I tried some sellier bellot 32 grain about an hour ago and pulled off a .225" three shot group, with the fourth shot being a flyer, making the group total size @ .5"

Very wierd how the hornady does not shoot in my rifle? its not a problem though, S&B is much cheaper

Strongarm......Is the Tikka you have photos of a .204 or .223? If it is a .204, I have not seen it available in the USA yet. Only in .223, 22-250, & 308.

I know what you mean. And I really like V-MAX in .222 and 22-250. I could not get them to shoot near as well in a 204 Cooper. I tried 4 different powders and both standard and BR primers. Up to 35 gr. bullets Berger and Sierra both shot better.
