21” barrel 25-06

Took the rifle out this morning and fired three 3 shot groups with the three types of ammo I had on-hand. Seeing as how I’ve already decided I’m not keeping it, I didn’t see the need to burn a ton of ammo that I didn’t pay for. The Hornady Superformance stuff shows some promise for sure. It’s the lowest group on paper. It’s the group at the bottom left of the target. The mystery ammo it came with showed some promise and in all honesty, the flyer may have been me. It’s the group closest to the bullseye. First two were pretty tight before throwing one out wide right. The Winchester Deer Season XP at the top left really wasn’t bad at all for a hunting round out of a hunting rifle. If I was in the market for another hunting rifle and the price was closer to $500, I’d have probably bought it and thrown it in the safe for next deer season.

On another note, this rifle is absolutely OBNOXIOUS! Might be the loudest rifle I’ve ever fired and I’ve had a couple 25-06s and a couple 257 Weatherbys. It’s so loud that it squeaks before it booms!

$750 is insane for a budda’d rifle. You can buy a brand new Winchester 70 for $1100.
Used M77s in good condition are selling for $900+ in my neck of the woods and the dealer didn’t realize the barrel had been cut until I pointed it out. I’m willing to bet he still gets $600 out of it.

Also, that does not explain how I’m losing money on the rifle…I literally cannot lose money on this rifle. I don’t own it and I’m not going to own it.

I'd be tempted to print out a sticker like this:

and put it on the tag.
In his defense, he didn’t notice the barrel when he took it in on trade. $750 if the barrel was original would be a decent price around here. M77s are steadily going up in price since Ruger has put so much emphasis on Americans. I gave $1300 for my last new M77 Hawkeye.

Looks to be a bubba job from the picture. That and my dislike for stubby barrels for fast calibers would have made me put it back on the shelf, especially for 750 bucks. However, you know what is said about opinions and yours may differ. I would do a through inspection of the barrel before if I was considering purchasing it.

It’s 100% a Bubba job and I’ve already said that I’m not keeping it. I took it out to shoot it at the dealer’s request. I think he’s in it at around $650 and I don’t think he’ll get his money back out of it. It did shoot well enough that if it was closer to $500, I’d buy it and have the barrel threaded and properly crowned. At $750, it’s just not worth putting any work into it.
