.22-250?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the 22-250 Ackley Improved. It actually benefits greatly because of all the body taper in the 22-250.
Yeah, that's pretty impressive looking ...

... as are Nosler's loading data for the cartridge.

Yes!! I handloaded a couple of .22-250s and considered reaming them to the "Improved" version, but didn't want to take a chance on ruining the fantastic accuracy mine were getting. Case-stretching made it a pain, though.

My 22-250 has been rebarreled and I went back with 22-250 AI. About the same case capacity as the 220 Swift (within 1 grain of alcohol) and just as fast. But it gets too hot for Prairie Dogs. Like others have said, its a great long range choice for Coyotes. Its scary accurate, one hole groups on command!

I wouldn’t feel uncomfortable in the least hunting whitetail with a 22-250 using 70 grain TSX bullets.

Addendum: I didn’t always feel that way about .224 bullets for deer, but over the years have changed my mind. I’ve seen too much evidence, anecdotal and otherwise that says .224 bullets are good for deer.

I recently bought a 22-250 in a Remington 788.I was pleasantly surprised to see the chronograph when I tried it out with CFE223 powder and a 52 grain A-Max.3,950 makes for a very flat shooting rifle. As an added bonus,I have some 64 grain Nosler Bonded Performance bullets that the 1 in 14 twist will stabilize and the rifle will shoot them plenty good enough to hunt deer with if I wanted to.I have had several 22-250's over the years, and most of them were great guns.None of them would out shoot or out velocity the one I have now.Two inches high at 100 has it dead on at 325.I would call the round a versatile varmint killer with other capabilities.I don't know if there's a varmint round out there that has much more going for it than the 22-250 does.

I feel like Rip Van Winkle. Back in the day the 22-250 was noted for being easy to reload with long life. I come awake today and it's a barrel burner that cannot keep up with cartridges with smaller case capacity. Frankly, some of this stuff sounds like repeated gospel read in the bathroom from the gun rags. Incidentally, the Swift's rep as a barrel burner and other bad stuff came from custom rifles built using .22RF barrel blanks. I'm sorry, some of this current conventional wisdom don't sound right.

Pops killed a lot of chucks w an early production Ruger#1B in .22-250. He loves the cartridge and ran 55 gr bullets in it. Myself? Am not a .22-250 fan. If i get his old rig itll be redone to .243 win. I do think a 1A in .250 savage w 22" bbl would be a polite deer rifle

Fwiw .243 nosler 70gr BT is very frangible you dont.t gain safety by choosing a .22-250 vs .243. you get a little more speed. Nice to hold on the fur out a ways. I prefer the .243 but know the .22-250 is wicked. On the longer stuff it seems to lose it. But heck....500 yard chucks here are rare
Hell chucks at any range are. So much for the good ol days

I have my Stag varminter .223 and Ruger RPR in .243 also own a Sako Forrester heavy barrel in 22-250. Don't shoot the Sako much I don't want to cook the barrel, only have 200 rounds through it. Gonna build another 22-250 someday but enjoy shooting the other two a lot......

I had a beautiful heavy barrel Sako Forrester in 22-250 that just would not shoot well. 5 shoot 1-1/2 or larger groups. I did everything known to man to help it and nothing helped it. I finally sold it. The guy that bought it did not seem to be the least concerned about the groups when we talked. I really hated to sell that rifle as my Wife gave it to me for our 15th anniversary. It was probably the only Sako in existence that wouldn't shoot well.

So, hypothetically, if one were to decide to build a .22-250 Ackley on a trued Remington 700 action, what barrel profile would y'all recommend? Light varmint? Heavy sporter?

Haven’t hunted since moving to TX, so more shooting than carrying these days. But I look forward to hunting again in the future, so not looking to build a bench gun.

So, McGowen is having a sale (19% off with code grad2019). Thanks to y'all's influence, I just ordered a 24-inch 1:8 twist 22-250 Ackley medium sporter barrel. Just need to order a recoil lug to go with it. I'll also have to find a set of go/no-go gauges to rent or borrow, but I'll have to wait on that until the barrel arrives.

In the interim, I guess I could order some dies and brass. You guys really are enablers!

use the Sendero/varmint profile. I would have it 26-27" to extract what the cartridge can do. I 1-9" twist would work , or a 1-8" would shoot any heavy low drag bullet out there . Uh oh looks like you allready leaped.

I have a 26-inch varmint profile in .260 Ackley, and decided I wanted something a bit lighter. It's not going to be a high round count rifle, so I'm willing to give up a bit of weight.

This will likely be my closing post on this thread. Just got the email that my new McGowen barrel has shipped! I'll start a new thread after it arrives to cover assembly and maiden voyage.

So thanks to enablers at THR, my "What's the point of the .22-250?" question has led to a .22-250 Ackley project. :)

Heaviet bulleta have more recoil. If you want to send 55's at max V.......and watch chucks pop,......22-250.

Yeah....you can run 55s in a 6mm. No need. No want either. Save the throat and run 70s.

People today like more scope mag and are content to hear a clang from yonder gong.

Watching groundhogs take hits to 400 is outdated.

Poos still has his Ruger #1 B in .22-250. leupold 3.5-10x AO. Old school cool.
