Alright guys here is my little review of the Aquila .22 SUPER Colibri ammunition.

(Sorry no pictures, my camera broke :( )

I stumbled upon this ammo while looking for a more economical solution to getting a suppressor and going through all the federal forms and decided I didn't want to meddle with the BATF, So I picked up a brick of 500 of this ammo from a major retailer online and just got it in yesterday. All of the information I provide here is accurate in my testing, your gun(s) may be different and provide different results.

At first, I looked at the tiny bullets these cartridges had and was almost disappointed with how small they appeared. However, I took my stock Ruger 10/22 and manually loaded a round after realizing that the magazine WILL NOT feed these rounds (Have 1 magazine that has a super colibri stuck in it.)

Now here is the part everyone is probably interested in:

Sound & How loud it is :

Out of the 18'' barrel of the Ruger 10/22, the round was very quiet, about 50% less noise than that of a normal Co2 BB gun (Even this is a conservative way of putting it.). Much louder in pistols than in rifles however, sounds like a CCI CB Short out of a Jennings J-22, but still relatively quiet. (Forget about hitting ANYTHING if you are using a short barrel pistol for shots over 5 yards or so.)

For the penetration and expansion test I used the following:

1x outdated and non-salable English textbook.

1x Stock Ruger 10/22 .22LR Rifle

1x Daisy 008 Co2 pellet/bb pistol.

The 7.4 grain Crossman wadcutter pellet exited the co2 pistol's muzzle at about 445 F.P.S and penetrated 13 pages of the textbook pages. (The cover is opened, the bullets do not have to pass through the cover.)

The Aquila SUPER Colibri .22 round, exited the Ruger 10/22 muzzle at 636 (136 more than advertised) FPS and penetrated 98 pages. The bullet expansion was remarkable, The expanded bullet was 1/4 of an inch in diameter!!!!

Conclusion: This is very fun .22 ammo and is more than powerful enough to take out small game or varmints.

How is .03" expansion remarkable? ;)

These rounds are pretty quiet out of my suppressed .22s, but not as quiet as Wolf Match Target. They also will not cycle the action of my autos.

compared to the air gun pellet, I'm not saying its expanding like a .45 ACP H.S.T here, jeez...

They sound like an air rifle out of my 10/22 and are ok on accuracy. I can blow up dum dum suckers at 15 yards. they are the most quiet ammo without getting a supressor. as I live in the commy state of Illinois I cant be trusted with one of the supressor thingys. All in all I like the ammo its fun quiet and allows me to shoot in my back yard. ssshhhhhh.:D

I know, just messing with you. I was really hoping this stuff would work in my autos because it's cheaper than the Wolf I normally use for target/suppressed work. The Remington subsonic is a little bit louder if I recall, but it will cycle the action in my Ruger MkII.

Don't sell it short at 5 yds, the wife and I use it in our Colt Frontier at about 30ft when the soda cans start to attack.

And if you do use them in your rifle keep in mind that sometimes they can and will stick in the barrel if not cleaned out every 15 shots or so. wanna know how I found out?

Shoot a couple and look down your barrel, you will see a bunch of residue. This slows down the bullet and eventually will stop it.

Well, welcome to this inner circle of knowledge, I suppose. :)

Super Colibris are great, I just wish they'd make them a little more accurate / consistent. About 4 rounds out of 5 will group nicely, but that 5th one will be a flyer. :(

They are definitely definitely better at killing birds at short range than a pellet gun (AND quieter than a magnum springer). Very good terminal performance to 10 or 15 yards, even on a crow. BUT, if you need to shoot past about 15 yards or so, a long .177 pellet with a higher BC will carry better and penetrate better.

Shoot them in a 24" or longer barrel, and they're *really* quiet.

Get yourself a turnbolt and you're in bidness, feeding wise.

P.S. A couple years back, I did a side-by-side accuracy test between RWS .22 Flobert BB caps, and Aguila Super colibri. The Mexican-made ammo was more accurate, BY FAR, in two different rifles of mine, than the German ammo. Not to mention cheaper and easier to find. Weird. This was from an 18.5" Henry H003 pump, and a 16.5" Rossi single shot.

PPS. On the "regular" Colibris, they say it's not wise to shoot them from a barrel longer than 20" or they may get stuck.

Yep those are fun and have their place just heed the warnings about shooting them out of rifle barrels. Your short barreled ruger is doing pretty good but I shot these out of a 25" barreled remington bolt and the third one stuck in the barrel. I didn't realize it and shot a forth shot that put a tiny ring in the barrel. Plus they were so slow by the time they left the 25" barrel that I could almost throw them by hand and match the velocity.

I had a 7.5" ruger single six and they were perfect for this gun. Good speed and just a little crack noise when they went off. If you get a chance try some of the remington CeeBee 22s. Thet are a 33gr bullet with a hollow point. They are not much louder than the s colibris and give better accuracy because the bullet fits the 1/16 twist better.

See ive never had a problem in my 10/22 or my old daisy. I wouldnt use it in any barrel longer than 18". The super colibri is fine in rifles but the colibri is not. I clean my barrel after every 100 rnds of this stuff.

I've been shooting them out of my Marlin 39A. Flawless feeding, accuracy goes to crap past 25yards. But for shooting squirrels in the backyard it is great, sounds like a toy cap gun.

I rarely clean the barrel of that Marlin, and it sees a ton of use at the range. Never had a problem with the Colibris sticking. I'm thinking since i shoot alot of High Velocity .22LR it blows out alot of the gunk and buildup that would cause the Colibri to stick.

i got a brick of them a long time ago and they were really fun to use at the outdoor and indoor ranges when nobodys around outdoor i think the sound of it wacking the target is louder my 10/22 feeds them perfect so its just like a stright pull bolt action and my romainian trainer was my favorite to shoot them out of they feed perfectly from the mag and the long barrel i think its a 22 or 24 is way more quiet than my 10/22 and tons of fun good for new shooters/ pepole who are afraid of noise to get them started.

also it is realy filthy too

Dr. Tad those were the super colibi rounds. I bought some of the regular colibris when they first came out and shot them up. After that all I have bought are the SC rounds. They seem to be just as quiet and I wanted the extra velocity.

I guess my Remmy has a tight barrel. I hate that it is damaged. That has always been a good shooting rilfe. The funny thing is can't tell ant real difference in the way it shoots now. The ring is small and happened 20" down the bore. Some day I will get inspired and shorten it behind the ring. I will have to shorten the mag tube as well.

I like the CCI CB long rounds as they don't grunge up the chamber. In the guns I shoot them they are the same as the Mexican rounds in DB level IMHO. Just a little louder but will work most semis is the Remington Low Noise LRHP round. Now those things will actually humanely kill animals less than 50 pounds or so.

I like the regular Colibris even better.

"Click... tick"

Quieter than any airgun I've heard.

Gordon I agree with the CB 22longs. Thats all of those I will buy for the same reason. Plus they will feed through my marlin model 60. I have to bolt it each time but thats okay.

I don't know about 50lb animals but they sure kill rabbits, squirrels and possums. I had a rabbit problem here at my new house. Rabbits tear the hell out of lawns. These will shoot right through a rabbit but have very little energy left. I can here them hit the wood fence but they don't even dent the wood.

colibri rock!!!!

I have been shooting these babies in my basement for awhile, they work great in my 10/22 and they even cycle through the mag (most of the time).

These make me want to ditch my pellet gun, because they are exactly the same power & make half the noise.

perfect for quite target shooting or small game hunting ( birds, squirrels, and rabbits ).

Out of my Remington Model 5, these Super Colibris are very quiet and accurate out to about 15 yards. Good for taking care of pests w/o bothering the neighbors.

They are very accurate through my Savage Mark II, but not as much so through my Marlin 981-T. They are great for my indoor range...good times. That reminds me...I have only 1 or 2 boxes left. :( Time to purchase.

Geno

Out of a 16" barrel they are about 1/4 of the volume of the subsonics, if that loud. Just remember all; if you want to use them out of a rifle keep the barrel length at about 16" and buy the "Super Colibri" (blue and silver box) not the standard "Colibri" (blue and purple box with a black humming bird on it). They are about 100fps different.
