I replaced the Hi-lux red dot on the 18" CMMG with a Nikon 223 1-4 scope I had on an AR. I Also had with me the 16" CMMG upper with the Sparc red dot and the GSG 1911.

I had removed the BCG on the 18" upper at home and paced 2 black dots on a sun lit window separated at approx the same distance (2.5") as the Nikon scope would sit above the bore of the 18" .22. Sighted the scope in at home and gathered all my junk and went to the range.

When placing some targets at a 25 yard post and at 54 yard post I noticed several golf balls laying around in the lane for this 327 yard course. I gathered some golf balls and placed them in the bare dirt lane starting at approx 15 yards kinda evenly placed every 10 to 15 yards out to approx 70 yards. While I was at the 70 yard mark I went ahead and placed a 10" target at the 115 yard post.

I did not get the lead sled but used a couple of carpet wrapped 6x8" blocks that were on one of the tables at the firing line.

My eyes are going bad which would not be so bad if my memory of having good sight would go also. But alas as other threads have mentioned getting old is not for sissies. I replaced the Hi-lux which worked just fine but did not like the size of the dot compared to the Sparc.

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=608749 cheap red dot thread.

Anyway, the first golf ball was only 15 yards away and I knew that at that range the the bullet should hit the dirt approx 6/8" low or there abouts....The bullets were impacting 1" right and ?? 2' behind the ball. It was so easy to see impact points in fine loose dirt...I adjusted the scope and by the second adjustment the 15 yard golf ball was flying like it was hit by a good hard putter stroke. From there I went to the 25 yard 10" target and was stitching the target approx 2.3" high from center of target. I adjusted the scope and fired for effect. I worked my way back shooting golf balls back to 70 yards with the scope set on 4 power.

I have a nice pair of Nikon Binoculars which I take with me for viewing targets when I have not brought a rifle with a high powered scope. Saves time from having to walk to targets and checking POI.

There was a thread here talking about shooting a .22 for 300 yards and that was one of the reasons I had chose this lane for shooting today. But before I tried to hit a 12" steel plate at 327 yards with the 18" CMMG upper with the Plumcrazy lower (sounds like a commercial) I took some shots at the 10" target at 115 yards. The little 4x scope really is clear and nice. I could not even make out the target at 115 yards much less see the center red spot without the scope. I had figured that the POI should be approx 4.5" low on target if I aimed for center of target so I put the bottom of the scopes pipper just above the center of the target. Fired 10 shots and all ended up about 3" low on the target.....good enough for me.

The 327 yard target kept calling my name...The wind was blowing at approx 06 to 10 knots and not steady from left to right the temp was 85f ( rather nice for here after all the heat ) I was actually enjoying myself.

I normally do not like punching paper or just wasting ammo but the golf balls actually added a bit of fun for me.

The first shot at the 12" steel plate was with out any wind correction at all and with the pipper placed at the top of the plate the round hit at least 80 yards short....Raised my point of aim until about half way up the vertical bar of the reticule. The rounds started impacting abeam the target but due to the wind they were impacting approx 5' right.

I must have shot 20 rounds at the steel plate and I might have hit it twice?? The little .22 does not ring the plate like a heavier caliber does so the two hits are not 100% for sure on my part but think I heard a thud and saw no dirt kicked up from a miss......

I then went to the 16" CMMG with the Sparc.. I do like that red dot and the size of the dot. Did the same thing with the golf balls out to approx 50 yards and was very pleased with the accuracy and consistency.

I had not experienced one misfire or FTF with the Federal bulk ammo in the .22 uppers. All mags used were CMMG mags or Blackdog.

I had purchased a new mag for a GSG 1911 that I wanted to try out and put some rounds down range with the pistol...

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=618114

First 10 rounds in the orginal mag were perfect with no FTF or feed. New mag and 3 shots later got my first clunk and no boom?? Cleared the round and fired two more shots and another clunk. The day had been perfect up to this point...Went back to my box of junk and used a little Breakfree CLP on the 1911 and I shot approx 60 more rounds with 2 more malfunctions FTF with the GSG. The slide is still not as smooth as it should be but have not shot that many rounds through it and have not done any work on the slide or rails; lazy.

I have not gone to a range with only .22s in so long I can not remember the last time?? I shot over 550 rounds and spent the better part of the day with myself, some golf balls and a few targets. I slept well last night and figure yesterday was one of the few times at a range I have actually enjoyed being there.

I hunt which is not boring to me.....paper is boring....Golf balls are fun....try hitting one after it is rolling from the first hit.....golf ball rabbit.....?:what:

A couple of up dates now that the CMMGs have hundreds of rounds through them. One day started getting some weird FTE that required me to pull the complete BCG out to clear the casing. Happened twice so I changed guns. Happened on the other .22 also when using the same mag? Changed mags and have not had that problem or any other for that matter happen again. The optics on the weapons are great and hold zero.
