I post this in the rifle forum (though mods, move it if you think that's appropriate) because of the amazement I felt upon shooting it. My friend bought a .22" air rifle to teach his grandchildren to shoot. It seems every bit as effective as a 22 rifle.

That thing went off with a crack every bit as loud as a 22 rifle from a long bbl. I was truly amazed. Supposedly, it fires at 950 fps. The friend commented that some said it could be effective on even the medium-sized vermin. And I don't doubt it. I was duly impressed.

I used my RWS M48 in .22 and a 2-7X AO scope to take squirrels in suburban wood lots where the report of a .22 RF would elicit a call to the Sheriff's Dept. for several years. With relatively heavy pellets (ca. 15 gr.) it chronos at about 830 f/s and while it isn't "silent", it doesn't make anywhere near the noise that a HS .22 Short does.

Head shots are pretty much necessary to make clean kills, but it's got the accuracy to do that reliably out to a bit over 30 yds once you learn the trajectory. I've killed several marauding 'possums and one 'coon with it here in town, too. Again, with such a lightweight projectile head shots are an ethical "must", IMHO.

A "springer" this powerful isn't exactly fun to lug around in the woods anymore at over 9# with the scope. And it takes a considerable amount of effort to cock it, even with the long lever's mechanical advantage. But it sure can be a very viable option when/if you have to do your hunting close to a subdivision.

Yeah, those spring piston .22 air rifles get pretty scarily close to the power of a .22. You can get really heavy pellets for them too.

If you ever get a pyramid air catalog though, you'd be amazed. They have some in there that fire a .357 slug at 1000 fps.

What kind was it?

Trust me, it isn't.
The sound is no indication of actual power, as it is just compressed air being released into the atmosphere. It in no way equates to the power of the tiny 15 grain pellet.
A .22 RF bullet normally weighs 2 to 3 times as much, and is going several hundred FPS faster then the best .22 spring-cocker air rifles.

A .22 air-rifle pellet hits plenty hard on squirrel & rabbit size game out to perhaps 35 - 45 yards.
Beyond that, it runs out of steam and trajectory just about where a .22 rifle is getting it's second wind.
Air rifle pellets have the aerodynamics of a badminton shuttle cock in flight.

BTW: That would be a .22 Caliber air gun.

Talon PC dialed up to 1000 FPS is pretty impressive. Makes quick work of backyard rodents. But, it ain't a 30 or 40 grain bullet. It's still less powerful.

Ive known some folks that bought a heavy springer to shoot pigs, few even managed to kill one. Ive seen it done with .22 pistols with reliability, so id be willing to do it with one of the heavy .22s or larger cal PCP guns. People have used the larger cal rifles to hunt deer, pigs, bison, and african plains game, and other stuff im sure.

Agreed, i was only adding that in as novelty information. Most of the heavy PCP guns also cost about twice as much as a good bolt gun. I owned a couple heavy .22 pcps both capable of generating upwards of 950fps with a 36grn lead bullet. Those are also no comparison to a 12-25flb springer, i still wouldnt use them on anything larger then maybe 20lbs by choice lol. I simply put forward that if you ARE interested in heavy air rifles they are available. They are also very loud, both of my .22 PCPs sounded like a .22rf
