Thinking about getting an Excel Arms 22 Mag for hunting, and was wondering what u guys thought of this cartridge for a lady's home defense cartridge as well?

Whether there's a male or a female behind the buttstock, it doesn't change the fact that it's not a great caliber for anything larger than coyote size. If you're suggesting that it's for a female due to lack of recoil, there are plenty of modern firearms that are easy to operate in more potent calibers. Additionally, going to a weapon in that small of a caliber because it will be easy to operate for someone who trains little or not at all is double shenanigans on that person, because not only are they untrained; they are also under-equipped.

Shot placement is the most important factor in a gun fight. But you can't develop that ability without training, and if you're going to train someone, it might as well be with a weapon suited to the intended task. On the plus side, you have an excuse to buy a couple new guns...

For more on women and guns for defense, I can't recommend the Cornered Cat web site enough for everyone involved.

Well, it beats unarmed by leaps and bounds ... but not really a great choice given the inexpensive HD-appropriate guns on the market.

It is an interesting gun, and if reliable would be about the best rimfire pistol for HD (although the KelTec offering on the way to market beats it handily in capacity with 30x in a flush-fit mag) ... but seriously, why hamper your ability to repel an invasion, inexpensive shotguns, handguns, and carbines are easy to find, if recoil and budget are issues there are pistol-caliber carbines (KelTec and Hi Point come to mind with ugly but serviceable offerings) and everyone needs a carry handgun which can be the HD gun as well, since it should be the most practiced-with gun in the house.

So ... how concerned are you about home invasions? Had some in the area? Economy on a downslide with people getting broke/stupid/desperate? Just wanting HD on principle?
Because if you have a serious concern, that pistol is incredibly inadequate compared to other options ... but if you're just arming up on principle the axiom of "beware the man with only one gun, he probably knows how to use it" comes to mind, and assuming reliability and serious training .22mag is so much better than nothing that I wouldn't scoff at it (some will).

If the gun is for a woman such that it is to give her the advantage over larger and stronger male attackers, then do you really think a .22 mag would be the best choice?

Note that .22 mag from a pistol is about comparable to .22 lr from a rifle.

There really are a whole lot of better choices for women for self defense, for anyone for self defense. That would include most of the gun spectrum.

My wife carries a 38 special Ruger LCR loaded with +P

For backup, she carries a SIG P232 380. She practices frequently on our farm and is quite good with them. I would not want her to have anything less than that to carry or for home defense.

To me,the main concern with 22 mag is the misfire concern.rimfire rounds, for me at least have a fail rate of about 5 to 1 compared to centerfire. In a revolver no biggie, just pull the trigger again. Also keep in mind that out of a handgun 22 mag is about the same as 22lr out of a rifle.
