I sincerely hope that ammo manufacturers produce more 22WMR ammo than the whole world can shoot in a decade, and that all of the people buying it and trying to double and triple their money get stuck with crates of it that nobody will buy. I know this isn't a complaint board and I'm not one to whine and complain but here in KY that particular caliber is a favorite among the hundreds of farmers that shoot groundhogs and it has been non-existent for well over a year. I got my Midway email again and it was sold out in under 8 minutes. Of course I didn't log in until 9 minutes passed. I know it is being produced because every store I ask says they are getting it weekly but it all sells within 30 minutes, and there are plenty of rounds listed on gunbroker. Thumbs up to Midway for charging an honest price. $40 for 200 rounds of CCI hollow points. The same boxes will soon be listed online for $100. It is not a popular recreational round, but instead a working man's round and it is a shame you have to pay ransom prices to get it. The firearms community all unites together to protect our rights and then some turn around and gouge each other when the opportunity to do so comes along. That's the end of my rant.

I use my 22wmr for squirrel hunting and shooting those pesky armadillos. I feel your pain as I was having trouble finding some for close to 2 years. Luckily I found the 40gr CCI hollowpoints a few months ago for 16.99 for 50. I bought three boxes and they will be used and not trying to make a profit.

Not a lot of it around here, but find a box here and there. Good thing in my case is I only shoot it in a Single Six, so a single box usually lasts me 3-4 trips to the range (as the majority of my single six shooting is .22lr).

Ditto here. Academy has 3 or 4 kinds of .22lr, and 2 or 3 kinds of .17 Hummer, but NO .22 WMR, and never does. Yeah, some people must be hoarding.

In centerfires, the scarcest is .243 Win. And yes, the bubble will burst on prices at some point.

I'm just glad I was stockpiling before stockpiling was cool. I haven't bought anything to speak of since the "Great Panic of 2013-2014".

Wait that's not true. I bought a Beta-C mag and a bunch of smokeless powder in Jan of '13 when the panic first started.

In september 2 years back right before the hoarding started, I lucked on a brick. I am still rat holling it. Untill I start seeing it become availible, I am sticking with my 22 hornet, at least I can reload them.

I have had quite a bit of luck with Bass Proshops. I manage to score 5 or so boxes (50 rounds) every month. Granted, some of it is funky 30 grain polymer tip, but it still shoots.

Yeah its tough to find here in PA too. I use it for groundhogs and target shooting. My marlin xt-22mvsr shoots .5" groups at 100yds.

Just the opposite here. Must be regional thing because 22MAG and 17HMR have been on the shelves every time I've walked into the local walmart for the past year and half. Didn't really think much of it since don't have guns in those calibers.

This is my problem too. I have a 93 savage in 22 mag.. I cant find it anywhere... but I can find all sorts of 17.... might have to buy a new gun...dang it...

An interesting side note here:

A .50 cal ammo box will hold 70 boxes of Winchester WMR, or 3,500 rounds.




I figured this out way back when I decided that my personal minimum amount of ammunition for each caliber I own would be one full ammo can. So I have at least 2 ammo cans for each caliber; one always full, the second is my "overflow". And then I have a "Range" can, which is the one I drop in whatever I'm going to take out shooting.

Unfortunately, I'm not in Kentucky. If I had run across this two months ago before I took off for a family reunion in Kentucky, I might have been able to help you out.

Some time back I decided .50 Cal cans full of ammo were too heavy. I have switched to .30 Cal cans, even if I have to double up. Two cans of 600 each .223 is better than one can of 1K .223. IMHO of course.

.22 Mag ammo has been showing up sporadically, often enough to have some. I was lucky to have just bought my normal 500 rounds of Fiocchi .22 Mag (Good cost to accuracy ratio) shortly before the craziness, so I had most of it and some 50 round boxes of premium ammo as well. Yes, the premium ammo shoots better.

Yeah, those 50 cal ammo cans mostly stay in the closet and serve as my grab-stash. My Range can doesn't get nearly so packed for an afternoon of shooting.

It seems that shortly after Kel-tec came out with their PMR-30, the .22 mags started becoming more scarce. Think of it. 30 rds. shot in 2 mins. or less.

I think you hit the nail on the head!
Also, I believe, the PMR is what prompted ammo manufacturers to come up with .22WMR for short barreled arms. Having several Grendel P-30's and a couple of PMR's not to mention a couple semi-auto's in magnum, I was well stocked before the panic, and haven't bought any since. My shooting has not slacked off either. The prices are coming down, and availability is up, I'm still going to wait until the gougers choke on a few deals before I think about re-stocking.

If there is a round that's been harder to find than .22 LR over the last several months, it's been .22 Mag. I've been fortunate enough to find a little locally now and then, but it's still as rare as hen's teeth hereabouts.

Bass pro shops in bolingbrook il had dozens of boxes of 22mag today. Winchester and CCI, limit of 200 rounds. Wasnt cheap though - $15 per box.

.22 LR is scarce here.

It all depends on if .22 Mag is useful for the critters in a particular place, it seems.

22 MAG and 40 S&W were the last two things that left the shelves at the local Wallyworld when everyone panicked. That prompted me to purchase a couple 40 S&W pistols and a set of dies. I already had a ton of .22 MAG ammo and firearms put back for such a time. I have helped a couple of other shooters that needed 22 MAG ammo. Told them to replace it if and when they are able to.

I'd use a .223 instead of paying the nearly equal scalper prices on 22wmr.
