.22 Magnum loads?

I have been asked by a friend to come to her farm and thin out some of the coyotes on her place. I don't hunt them on a regular basis but have called some in, in the past. I don't really have a dedicated coyote rifle anymore but I plan on using my .22 magnum bolt action. I know this is not the best coyote rifle but it's what I have. I have a question as to what load of the 2 I posess is better for coyotes.

I don't think either is the best choice but I voted for the 40grn JHP. I prefer the Win 40grn FMJ but I can't find Winchester .22 mag ammo any more

Yeah I know neither one is perfect but of the 2 what is better.

I guess I could use my 30-06.

I've seen plenty of feral dogs killed with a .22 LR, so I would say go with the 40 grain Winchester and keep the shots within 100 yards. Everybody seems to think it takes a .50 cal to kill anything these days.

22 WMR is plenty out to about 150 yds. 100 yds would be your max under normal circumstances, but take the longer shot if you can hit your targets. Just make good killing shots. My feeling is that you want the heaviest solid points sold rather than super high speed small bullet weight loads. Take advantage of the 22 WMR's good points and don't try to make a 17 Rem out of it.

Learn to call them. It will be fun and challenging.

'coyote killer'

There is actually a compressed-powder .22 mag loaded with hornady expanding tip bullets called the coyote killer. I forget the name of the manufacturer (It's not a big three loading), but you can google it.

I got a female not to long ago with a 22WMR. a neck shot at around 35 yards,she went about 30 feet, but i think she was dead at impact, her back legs just didn't know it yet. at the shot she lunged 12 feet on her back legs and then plowed the rest. i have a marlin 883 ss and i used Rem premier 33gr, they have a ballistic tip and fly at almost 2000 fps in the marlin. they open quick, neck damage was considerable. if you can't find them, go with the 40's. good luck.

Avoid head on shots (tough if you are calling them in). I had a 40 gr Winchester hp bounce off a coyote's skull that I shot at about 40 yards, and he ran off shaking his head before I could feed him another. It is also extremely difficult to hit them in the chest without hitting heavy leg bones, one of the reasons I went to the 64 grain Winchester PP bullets in my 22/250. That killed them dead right there. The 22 mag will kill them, but seldom will they drop on the spot.
