I was thinking of getting a Taurus .22 mag with the 2 inch barrel. Ive never fired one myself, but ive heard people say that the .22 mag is very loud out of a handgun. I guess a 2 inch barrel would only make things worse.

How would a .22 mag revolver compare to say, a 9mm or .40s&w as far as noise/blast?

the faster the bullet the more noise is makes.

its not really louder but much sharper with a real crack init.

but it might differ from user to user.

IMHO i think .22 lr Stingers have a crackier and sharper sound then a 9mm.

eiterway use ear protection. just shows how stupid people are that dont use em.

Thanks.

I do always wear ear protection but I shoot at indoor ranges often and I find it unpleasant being around ear splitting guns when shooting at an indoor range.

Is the "crack" in the same ball park as a .357?

It's a very sharp noise pulse. It hurts my ears in the field. I don't like the round at all, and that's shooting it out of 10" Contender barrel. It's more expensive, and I can't use regular .22 rimfires.

noise

nah... 357 is much louder. I have a little NAA mini 22 mag 1.5" barrel and it's not that bad. I think anything 9mm and up is louder than a 22 mag.

I've never fired one without ear protection but the 22 mag is significantly sharper compared to a 22LR. It's similar in nature to the crack of a 357 mag but not as loud and lacks the concusive force you can feel in the air from a full house 357. I doubt I could fire a 22 mag without hearing protection without flinching. But maybe I'm just a sensitive soul.

It's not merely the velocity of the exiting bullet, it's the pressure of the gas behind the bullet at the moment the bullet exits the muzzle. That plus the volume of gas. The shorter the barrel, the higher the exit pressure (to a point, I'm sure).

Has anyone chrony'd a CCI Velocitor in one of those 2" NAA's? I'm curious how they compare to the .22WMRs in such a short barrel.

I chronographed some CCI Maxi-Mag 40 grain FMJ from a 1 5/8" NAA mini. Average velocity was about 950 fps for about 80 ft.-lbs. of energy. I didn't have any of the Maxi-Mag +V 30 grain JHP at my last range outing, but I have since gotten ahold of some. The next time I make it to the range, with the chrono (it might be a while) I plan to chronograph the +V from the same gun and see what the results are. In the .22 LR cylinder the CCI Stinger was actually faster, at 1000 fps, than the magnum rounds. However the lighter bullet resulted in less muzzle energy. I am looking forward to the results with the +V magnum.

As for the noise level of the .22 Magnum the solution at the indoor range is plugs and muffs. I suppose the real question is, why the .22 Magnum? Are you planning on using it as a defense gun? If not, I suggest the .22 LR version. .22 Magnum ammo is as much as four times as expensive as .22 LR ammunition.

It has a very sharp "crack". Very unpleasant without hearing protection. Back in my youth when I knew no better, I shot numerous calibers without hearing protection. (What's that ringing? Huh? I can't hear you. My ears are ringing.) My caliber choices were influenced greatly by how they were on the ears.

A 9MM would be better in a defensive situation, to me, and a .45 even better. It is more of a low boom. Yea, you can't hear well for a bit, but you can hear better, and your ears are not in pain like the high pressure, high velocity stuff will do to you.

I find the .22 magnum out of my 1" barreled revolver to be just below the noise level of a standard pressure .38 special. Fired indoors no hearing protection I had no problems. Ringing in ears for short time. wouldnt shoot a whole lot without hearing protection of fear of accumulative hearing damage. It's more of a high pitch blast.
Is the "crack" in the same ball park as a .357?
NO WAY
