.22 semi autos... which is best for the money?

It depends on what you want to do with the rifle.

If you want to Barbie it up with hi cap mags, a fancy barrel, black foldy bits, or a handsome wooden stock, the 10/22 is the best choice.

If you want to shoot it as it right out of the box, the Marlin will probably be more accurate than the 10/22.

I don't really know anything about the 597.

A family member had the Savage. Out of the box, it has a better trigger than the 10/22, but it isn't as reliable. The magazines are awful to load, and a little fiddly to remove and insert. We didn't put it on paper, but it seems to be reasonably accurate.

I'm not aware of any hi-caps for the Savage nor the Marlin.

I love my Colt M16/22lr

30 round magazines. It is awesome.

Only thing you have to dial in the ammo, and leave it at that. I have mine set for 40 gr Blazer lead heads. Otherwise it can take 30 minutes dialing in some other ammo.

my uncles model 60 holds 18+1... i was actually shooting it last weekend at that's why im all of a sudden intrested in getting a .22 auto loader... i dont like tube mags in autos though... dont mind a tube in a bolt or lever gun, but semi autos, i'd rather have a box mag, easier to load... and i want one just for playin around with, if im gonna hunt small game, i'll use my shotgun... at the moment, im leaning towards the plinkster or the 597... and as for the colt, im not spending more than ~$250 on a plinking gun...

Co-worker at the shop bought a 10/22 stainless target model with hammer forged barrel. First day out shooting and with-in the hour he had dialed in the scope and was putting all shots in a 1" hole at 50 yards. I was impressed with the rifles trigger, fit and finish and mag release.

the kel tec su22 is better than commonly believed. Under the compact handguard the barrel is at least an inch thick. Trigger beats ruger standard.

I like my 10/22, but the trigger sucks. I had a Marlin 60 as a kid, it was more accurate I think, but I've used a 10/22 for almost 30 years since (most all my life) and I don't think I've ever gone to a range without it.

One of these days I may get around to putting a better trigger in it.

If you like your uncle's Marlin 60 then the 795 is pretty much the exact same thing but with your desired box magazine.

Without looking at the prices of the others it might be the cheapest as well. Marlin used to offer rebates to where you could get blued models for about $100.

If you want to modify it get a 10/22 otherwise I would go for the marlin 795. I'm getting a 795 today and IMO it's probably the best gun for the price.

Hands down, the Ruger 10-22. The 10-22 is most popular and highest selling 22 LR on the market today. My guess it has also surpassed the Marlin 39 in overall popularity. I have both and won't give up either. :)

I would have to recommend the 10/22 also. It will pretty much eat anything yo can feed it and has a ton of aftermarket stuff you can add to it

The 795 has probably offered me the most bang for my buck of any "cheap" gun I have purchased. I got it for about 100 bucks with a rebate from Marlin. I've put a few thousand rounds through it with out so much as a wipe down. I did buy an extra mag so that when my buddy and I go shooting we can load one while the other shoots.

I don't go to the range without it. Plenty accurate with iron sites and I just love the 60/795 mechanism. A little tough to clean (be careful with the spring:eek:) but I think my dad's needed to be cleaned about every 25 years or so;)

I have owned the Marlin 60, Ruger 10/22, Winchester 190&290, and the Remington597. For the last 13 years the 597 has been my go to .22lr. It is the most accurate, less trouble, easy to take down and clean.

The Marlin 60 was not on OPs list, and he knows what they are

Marlin 795
luck of the draw and all that, but any typical off the shelf Marlin rimfire autoloader will outshoot the unmodified base model Ruger 10/22 9 times out of 10

i need to correct the kel tec barrel isn't near an inch under the handguard there was a collar there that fooled me. it is thick though I would say close to .700 inch. Kind of like a ruger target pistol barrel diameter.

I've always liked the little Browning takedown .22 rifle, but it's kind of expensive. Before Clinton, when they were available for import, I bought the Chinese Norinco clone of the Browning at Wal-Mart for $99, and I've been happy with it. At that price, I'd consider it a great value, and it stands out from all the Marlins and Rugers out there. :)
They're still available to Canadians who don't have the Chinese gun ban the anti-gunners stuck us with: http://www.marstar.ca/gf-norinco/22-JW-20.shtm

Another vote for the Remington 597. It just feels better in my hands than the 10/22, and it's way more accurate than I am.

I own a Marlin 795 which is a cheap budget rifle. It works and is a good bang for the buck but not very high quality. Sights suck. Makes a good beater gun though. Can be found for around $100 or so after rebate.

Rem 597-Good value for money-Accurate and reliable. Often found for under $200.

Ruger 10/22-First and last 22 you ever need to buy. Good quality, good value for the money. You don't have to do anything to it unless you want to. Add a scope and a sling an you are good to go. Lots of them in circulation and can often be found in pawn shops for under $150. Current retail is just over $200 for the basic rifle.

I have a stainless/synthetic 597 and some 30 round mags for it. I put on a cheap Simmons 4x scope and called it good. I gotta say, after getting the ammo dialed in, it's really accurate. I likes Remington and Federal ammo (I get the 525 round packs) and hates all others. Blazer turns it into a single shot.

The real problem with this rifle, in my opinion, is the recoil springs/guide rods. They're held in by two little allen head bolts, and getting them in and out of the rifle is a pain. You can easily end up bending the springs too far if you're not careful. On the plus side, the construction is all metal, so you can grab the can of Gunscrubber and blast away. I just wish the spring setup was better.
