My .22-250 is a box-stock Rem.M700ADL synthetic. It, with ammo it "likes" shoot sub-1/2" at 100yds. (most acc. centerfire I own, or have ever owned...)
It "likes" a Sierra or similar quality bullet (Nosler, Berger, Speer) seated to SAAMI max. of 2.350" oal. This is somewhat shorter than to the lands which is about 2.400" depending on bullet.
Like previous poster stated, with most production rifles, you'll likely get better accuracy by seating the bullet deeper to ensure adquate strength of bullet "pull", and alignment provided by a deeper seating depth. Run-out or "wobble" of loaded ammo means more often than absolute over-all length.
I have a Ruger M77/22Hornet that is characature of this concept. It shoots best with bullets seated to, or deeper than SAAMI which is very short @ 1.732"oal, though to seat most bullets to grooves is around 1.84". 1.780" is the longest the magazine will accept and feed. The rifle however has such a sloppy cut chamber such that it shoots best with full-length sized and deep seated bullets such that they "lie" in the chamber consistently rather than sized to fit the chamber, which is also out-of-round, such that a partially sized case will be "sized" out of round if not exactly aligned in the chamber as was when it was last fired....... But, with ammo it "likes", It'll shoot 1.0-1.5MOA.... It's probably going to be sent off and re-barreled to .17 Hornady-Hornet...... So as to start with a clean slate......
You have to experiment to find exactly what your rifle "needs".....
I've got a Remington M7 in .260 that wants the brass "snug" and the bullets touching the lands and about 5% below max. Difference between "factory" spec's. and reloaded specs is 3"+ groups and sub-1" 5-shot groups at 100yds...... It took several hundred rounds reloaded and fired to establish this pattern with this rifle......
But, my Rem.M-7 in 7mm08 is a totally different animal and no-where as accurate as the .260. Go figure.....!
