223/556?

Cartridge length is 2.26 because that’s all the magazine will allow. If you go over you can’t feed from a standard AR magazine. Results may vary if you’re talking about bolt guns. I’ve seen people post about 2.235” or maybe more but that was out of a bolt action with a magazine that would handle it or single fed.

There are little case length gauges that slip into the mouth of the brass then are inserted into your chamber to find out how long your case can be.

Most of the time you will find that the chamber will allow for longer than 1.760"

I trim mine right at 1.760, because why trim more than is needed? I also use a headspace gauge to make sure to only bump the shoulder between .002 and .003" on my semi auto loads. On my bolt action it is between .001 and .002" This keeps brass growth to a minimum.

i know that the case length is 2.260, but can you go 10 thousandth over and not get in trouble?
2.260 is max per the book, but I have seen hit or miss issues with some mags having issues at that COAL with certain bullets, so I load at 2.255 for long heavy bullets. Mags in question that I tested were Lancers and Magpuls, others may have this issue, YMMV.
I do have some some mags that will allow a 2.310 COAL made by ASC, which I dont think they make anymore. There are some companies out there making long COAL mags, just cant remember the names offhand.

An email to them confirmed that they are still making them and will accept 2.3" COAL rounds.

The aluminum version are limited to 2.26

Thats good. I like mine, and they are handy to have on hand.
I bought some SSTL Grendel mags from them as they used be extended COAL, but they are not. Not sure if the newer ones are again.
I wanna say the Duramag SSTL mags are extended COAL, but I could be wrong.
