I am wanting to purchase a substantial amount of .223 ammunition for my AR-15. Wanted to know if anyone can provide some input on 'good' ammo for a 'good' price. Price is, of course, an option but it is not as important as the rounds being completely reliable. Any input will help.

Thanks

What's substantial? 500 rounds? 2,000? 10,000?

Some say Radway Green is a little weak and may cause AR's with older, weaker springs to not function(hearsay),and lacquered Wolf is dirty but I've shot plenty of it with no problems.

Other than that, any surplus is good. Some's better than others, but I'd just stock up on what I could find for a good price.

I just bought 1000 rds of Silverbear for $250 and my WASR3 eats it up and it is a little cleaner than Wolf which is what I bought last go round. For must go bang ammo I use Hornady to hunt, not cheap. American Eagle makes some really nice .223 also, which is what I use in my Rem 700.

Thanks guys, 1,000 rounds will be substantial.
Ha! Surely you jest...

There's guys on here that would be in a state of panic if their stash got that low. Heck,we've got guys who break out in hives at the thought of going under 10k. Gotta be prepared. There's not an ammo shortage,it's all in HighRoader's basements.;)

If you are comfortable with replacing the extractor on what you'll be shooting it out of you can look for steel case to shoot? If not, and you should know how to do this anyway, you may want to stick with brass case.

Yep, 10k is my panic level...a little above that at the moment...and little sweat beads are forming as I think about it...

Wolf is just fine and will most likely be your cheapest option. I've shot THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of rounds of Wolf through my Colt 6920 with NO ISSUES AT ALL. *IF* the extractor becomes an issue (and personally I think it's an old wives tale) you can replace a $10 extractor many times over with what you'll save.

You may also wanna rethink that "1,000 rounds will be substantial" ;)

Canned Heat from Georgia Arms. Might catch them at a show or online.

Are you sure you don't 1,000 cases? That would be substantial.

I love going to Walmart, asking how much [whatever] WWB and UMC ammo they have and then say, "I'll take all of it."

223 is really easy to get, at least around here. Its all a matter of how much you are willing to shop around. Buy a few different brands in smaller quantities until you decide what brands work best for you.

Threads like this is what makes me think I don't want an Evil Black Rifle. The though of shooting $330 in one weekend scares me!:what:

I have a little under 2,000 rounds and I am sweating. Wolf, Brown Bear and Barnaul are all just fine if you keep your gun clean (especially the chamber). Monarch from Academy is also fine, and pretty cheap.

how do you guys feel about aguila? I'm really torn on .223, not sure if i want to get into reloading it, I did some figuring and it just seems like its not cost effective enough to do so. but I'm thinking it'd be better to go with ammo that can be reloaded just incase down the road I have to do so, eliminating most wolf.

Ok, I'll admit it. The only time I go thru that much ammo is when I go to an AR15.com shoot and get to shoot other folks full-auto guns all day (wish I could afford my own). 1000 rnds goes pretty quick when shooting FA.

In a typical semi-auto AR day, I usually shoot 200-300 rnds. But I'm cutting down with the ever rising cost of ammo. I do most of my shooting these days with my Rem 700 bolt rifle and make 60-80 rnds last for hours. I'm definitely leaning towards quality over quantity these days. :(
