I have never heard of anyone that has said "I wish I had less magnification" on a target rifle, hunting maybe.
Nearly any scope can get you to five hundred with a large-ish target.
I like the Vortex Viper HST for the criteria. A little less than the budget, a good retical and good magnification range, clear glass...
And I don't have any experience with anything else yet.
The un-illuminated PST is right at the spending limit.
They also have a few less expensive FFP scopes for getting wet feet with mils.
And a nice Adjustable Objective four by twelve I'd like to try on my rimfire.
All my scopes are Vortex. Golden Eagle to Crossfire II.
The GE is on
my Valkyrie.
Every Leupold I've looked through seemed to have more color correct lenses. But I can never get a good retical, good turrets and a fair price to converge on a Leupold. For the extra money they
are nicer. They aught to be.
It's just I think of all the bullets and powder I could buy with the difference...
