I have not shot a firearm in years. I really want to get back into shooting, but I have noticed a big problem. One being that I can't even find any 22LR ammo. I wanted to buy a new pistol in .22 ,but I don't know if I should even buy one. I went to 5 stores in Oregon and they were all out, and said they get it and in 5 min's its all gone. I want to get a .22 pistol to get the handle of shooting again. Easy to shoot and no recoil etc... The .22lr ammo is so scarce I am not sure if I should pick up the hobby/sport again. Is there any online stores or something that I need to check out or something. I was really happy to think about shooting again , but I don't know if its worth it. Maybe there is a different caliber that's easier to find and cheap/cheaper ? I really didn't want any recoil though. I have a .45 acp for home protection, but i really don't want to use that for training. Thanks for your time.

.22LR is in short supply, I'm afraid. Honestly, I'm not certain when you will be able to walk into a store and walk out with a brick of .22LR like you used to. No online places that I know of reliably have it at a decent price. It'll come back someday, but right now I'm not sure I could in good conscience recommend you buy a .22LR firearm if you want to start shooting again. 9mm is pretty plentiful again and not too expensive, but you can still buy quite a bit more .22LR for the same price, even at gouger prices I'm told. You just have to find it. I never thought I'd ever have to worry about running out of .22LR myself, but almost 1 1/2 years into this shortage I've got less stocked than I would have ever planned on. I've got another case on backorder, but have no idea when I would expect to see it.

Maybe look into a high quality/high velocity air rifle? I've thought about that a few times myself.

I've just stuck with 9mm when I can find it, black powder when I can break away long enough to go to the outdoor range to shoot it, or (sadly) just not shooting as much as I would like:(

I've also taken up archery as a fun pass time. I can shoot all day with one of those 20# Genesis bows instead of my 50# recurve, I can do it in my own suburban backyard, and it's something my daughter might want to get into with her daddy:)

That said...yeah, .22 needs to hurry back. I've been itching to take out my Ruger Mkiii for like a year and a half now. I'm down to about 250 rounds of .22 and i'm keeping that for a real emergency.

I wouldn't let the current scarcity of .22 LR deter you from buying a pistol. .22 isn't "gone forever", it's simply harder to get right now because of the current demand on the market.

Spend your time shopping around for a .22 handgun you want, and while doing so get into the habit of checking out various stores on a routine basis for .22 LR ammunition. You'll find some. And all you really need is a small supply to get you started again. Score a bulk pack or two and you'll be set for a little while as you continue the search.

I'm on the East coast, a wee bit too far to meet up face to face and spot you some of mine. I'd be happy to sell you a box or two at cost, otherwise. But shipping costs would quickly take all the joy out of that.

You can order it online, like the link in post #4, but if you're going to do that you might check out actual local gun shops. Not the sporting goods places in Walmart, or at Dick's and such...actual local gun shops. They'll be the ones more likely to have it in stock because they will likely adjust their retail prices high enough to keep everything from evaporating off the shelves faster than they can put it out. It'll be higher priced, and they still won't have it in stock all the time, but you're more likely to find some.

Keep the faith. Things are slowly improving.

Where at in Oregon? If in the Salem area pm me and I know where you can get some if you buy a pistol from them. Since you are in the market for one.

.22LR can be had. Just about anytime you want it. Register at gunbroker and prepare to pay .20 a round or more:what:.

It seems our "brothers" in the shooting community that can get there when the truck is unloaded are perfectly willing to profiteer (scalp) to insure you have a ready supply.

23 pages of .22lr listed for re-sale last I looked. Wish I could remember every one of those who took this path in case the tables are ever turned.

An air rifle sounds like a good idea to me also. The high quality offerings extremely accurate.
As we speak, a local FFL has all the .22 ammo you need for $35.00 / brick.

Im in Eagle Creek Oregon. Well maybe I should be looking to get a bigger 9mm pistol, but that would be for another thread. I appreciate the suggestions about the .22 info.

Since .22 ammo is so scarce and expensive to obtain if and when you do find it, I was going to suggest you that maybe you should go the 9mm. route. Ammo is available and relatively inexpensive and there are any number of full size guns on the market that are easy to use with not all that much recoil. You didn't say what your .45 was but I would bet you could find a similar model as what you already have in a 9mm.

22 ammo IS available, and much cheaper than 9mm. You just have to work at it a little. Here is an ad on Armslist for 2000 rounds for 10 cents per round near Portland. Far from ideal, but still cheaper than 9mm. So it's out there, just not like it used to be. I'm under the impression (possibly wrong, so feel free to correct me) that you're retired. You may have to start spending some time at your local Walmart or other retailer to get a feel for when their ammo arrives.
I wouldn't suggest NOT buying a 22 handgun though. In fact, now might be the best time to purchase one.

Get the 22 handgun and buy ammunition as you find it. Just how much do you think you might shoot in a month?
