22LR companion gun for main carry gun?

Just wondering, does anyone here have and use a 22LR handgun that is a companion to your main carry gun?

And do you train with it often?

If so, how?

I'm thinking of something like a 22LR conversion for a 1911, or a Kadet barrel and slide for a CZ75, or a 22LR j-frame to go with the .38 Special j-frame, or a S&W 617 22LR K-frame to go with a model 65 or 686.

I have a S&W 617, but have been carrying my Hi Power more recently, and am wondering if I should invest in a Browning Buckmark, or just stick with the 617.

I don't know if there is that much training difference between a 22LR revolver or semiauto to be worth the $500 investment...
 
I have an Advantage Arms .22lr conversion for my Gen3 Glock 26. I don't use it as much as I expected at the moment, but it's nice to have. Same sights, same trigger, same holster...noticeably less expensive ammunition...good deal
 
I dont understand carrying a full size handgun loaded with 22lr for SD... Now a little snubby or small auto to compliment a carry gun... why not. 2 is one...
 
If you reload you can make 9mm for about what you see 22 selling for nowadays and practice with the same recoil and everything. The price of a kit would more than pay for a very simple but efficient reloading setup
 
I have several .22 Pistols, including a Colt Woodsman, a Colt Officer's Model Target, a Ruger MKII with a bull barrel, and a Colt Conversion kit for the M1911. I mostly carry the Woodsman because of its superb accuracy.

I have a S&W 6" 617 to go with my S&W 2 1/2" 66, and a M&P 22 to go with my M&P shield.
Always start with a .22 before moving up, then back to the .22 to wind it down.
 
I never really believed in the concept of a .22 model of a gun as a training piece.

If you want a .22, it should in a gun that best utilizes the .22, which is to say a small piece that's easy to shoot with and light.
 
not sure a training gun needs to exactly match your full size gun.
i tricked out my 22/45 to make it the most accurate gun around.
cheap ammo allowed me to fire 8,000 training rounds. i couldn't afford that with centerfire.
i can now get 2'' groups at a measured 25 yards. anyone can, with that amount of practice.
think you could miss a torso target at 25 or 50 yards with any 1911 once you can do that with a 22?
 
I have carried a Colt Woodsman at times while hunting for a lifetime.

A got a S&W SS kit gun and I don't like it. I much prefer the Woodsman style pistol.

The kit gun is not as easy to carry nor shoot. I am going to sell it to a dealer.

How much $ do you think they will offer?
 
susieqz, that's an interesting reply, thanks. perhaps the style of 22LR pistol doesn't make as much difference as the front sight/press practice you get, which then translates to whatever carry pistol you happen to have?
 
That's exactly right!!

And everyone should have a .22 in order to go back and practice those basics in order to break that nasty flinch you developed shooting your Eargasplitten Loudnboomer carry gun.

I bought a random G19 lower and put a 22 conversion kit on it for a dedicated 22 practice gun to my regular G19.

I do the same drills I would with the 9mm, usually as a warm up before the 9. Helps with the fundamentals.
 
And for what it's worth, I really wish for a 22 conversion for the LCP.
 
I have a 22 revolver just like my 357. I always warm up with 22's at the start of my shooting sessions.
 
acp, i really believe that's the case.
a 22 allows you to shoot more. shooting any caliber lots
is what counts.
i've been shooting more than 1000 rounds every month.
i couldn't do half that with centerfire, just too expensive.
i picked up a big old cowboy gun. there was some hand confusion with a single action, but i see some accuracy carry over even with that.

I have a TacSol .22 conversion on an old Essex frame I put together some years ago. Works great as an inexpensive trainer for all of my other 1911s. Same with the Kadet .22 assembly I bought for my CZ P01. Also have a S&W Model 34 to go with my S&W revolvers.
 
bannockburn, sounds like you've got all the bases covered!

I can do with my 4" S&W 617 for 22LR practice... I guess... it pairs well with the S&W 65 Ladysmith (3" barrel) and to a lesser extent with the two S&W 642s I carry in the summer.... maybe I'm looking for an excuse to buy that reasonably priced ($480) Buckmark Plus UDX down at Cabela's that I have fondled a few times... I have been very impressed with my Browning Hi Power, and I hope and expect the Buckmark would be as reliable...
