I was just wondering if anyone else has ever had an experience simiilar to the one that I had today. I bought a Savage 93F, synthetic stocked and plain barrel .22mag rife on Monday. I brought it home and put a Nikon scope on it and grabbed a box of CCI 40gr hp ammo off the shelf and took off to the range. Got to the range and had the gun shooting well within just a few minutes. I left the range content that the gun was a fairly good shooter. Fast forward to today...I decided that I would take the gun back to the range to compare it's performance with the CCI to how it would shoot my personal favorite ammo of Wlinchester 40gr hp in the silver box. Upon ariving at the range, I verified that the rifle was still spot on out to 150yds with the CCI and then I started with the Winchester. The results with the Winchester were nothing less than a disaster. Try as I might, I never got the rifle to group the Winchester any bettter than 5" at 100yds...targets looked like a buchshot pattern. My son was along, so we both tried with the result being identical. I know that rimfires can be ammo sensitive, but I have never experienced anything like this. My other mags have a preference for a particular ammo but none of them just refuse to shoot one type ammo with any degree of consistency. I finally just set it back for the CCI and gave up on the Winchester.

Have any of you ever had anything like this happen with a rifle?

Guess you have learn some of the down side of rimfire cartidges. 22lrs will do that. You may find hornady groups like cci as I think they make both for the 22mag, I think . With the 17hmr cci makes them all. Just relabeled.

It happens. It's your duty to determine what ammo your rimfire firearm prefers. And there's no rhyme nor reason as to what it might be. One gun preferring one particular ammo choice has no bearing on a similar, or even identical model. Such is life.

Hell, I've even the proud owner of a reliable Ruger 10-22 Magnum rifle. Go figure.

Yeah, I have shot a ton of rimfire for many years, I have just never had a rifle do that poorly whether in mag or lr.

Shortly after buying my first .22 mag, I tried to test every type of ammo I could find.
My experiences ranged from being able to shoot golfball sized groups at 70 yds, to being lucky to hit a volleyball.
I happened to write(long before internet) CCI & Winchester both as well, telling Winchester how pleased I was & CCI how disappointed I was.
(opposite of your situation)

Winchester sent me a "Winchester iron on patch" and CCI sent me another inaccurate box of their +Vs.

That is the nature of the beast with rimfire ammo.

I don't think there is a problem with your rifle or the ammunition. I have multiple .22 LR rifles (not Mag) and they each do better on one type or the other. (Not really bad with any, however) I imagine that with the extra velocity it could be amplifying the problem in your 22 Mag.

For whatever reason, I've had less than good shooting with Winchester Dynapoint .22 Mag out of rifles. CCI and Hornady have proven drastically more accurate in my experience whether 30 grain or 40 grain .22 WMR.

I can get by with the Winchester out of a handgun at 25 yards with less noticeable accuracy differences, but the Winchester chambers tightly compared to the others.

I had a 25mn that shot one hole at 50 with dynapoints and almost softball size at 50 with v max or whatever the pointy varmint ones are by HDY. I imagine at 150 it would look like buckshot pattern.

22WMR's are picky buggers to say the least
