I've seen a few of these lately. 24" barrels on most, but I've seen 26" and even 28" models. Why would someone make/buy one these? Isn't the 22 LR slowing down after about 16 inches? What is the purpose of this?

The only .22lr rifles I can think of with barrels that long all have open sights and are not really designed to have a scope mounted. In those cases it isn't the velocity that matters so much as the increased sight radius, making aiming them more precise.

The CZ training rifle is a little over 28", but that makes sense (for training). The Marlin 39 is 24", which seems stupid long to me. I won't even buy a center fire levergun that long.

Of course I can't find it, but the reason I started this thread was I saw a 26" long bull-barreled (no sights) 22lr for sale yesterday. Of course I can't find the ad...

I won't buy a 22 over 20" because it's not doing anything for me with a scope. I guess I understand the desire for a longer sight radius, but a cheaper/better/higher velocity option would be a receiver-mounted peep sight.

Increased sight radius as mentioned is the only functional benefit. I like the long barrel on my Marlin model 39, and CZ Super Lux for the added weight and stability for offhand shooting.

+1 on the sight radius. Another benefit is that, as long as the bullet remains subsonic, longer barrels are generally quieter.

I have my granddaddy's Remington Model 41 Targetmaster single-shot 22LR with 27" barrel. Very quiet. My eyes suck for leaf sights now, but I can still do fairly well with that long sight radius.

I have a 25" rem 511P make for better open sight shooting before scopes became the norm and try some cci Quiets in it and you can hear the trigger group as its now louder than the putt that comes out of the barrel.

Good post.

I have on old Mossberg with a long barrel and shooting standard velocity in the woods or open country is very quite. I don't need ear protection. And, the trajectory is still pretty good. CCI Quiets or sub are better than an air gun, but drop like a baseball.

I like long barrel 22s.

BTW, my 22 is tube fed so I can fit about 300 22 shorts in the tube and shoot till I hit something.

The CZ Trainer is only 24". The Ultra Lux is 28"....I have one of each. They are great with open sights. The UL is very quiet with standard velocity ammo.

Target rifle of yesteryear had long barrels. The Remington Model 37 has a 28" barrel.

Noise is also a factor. Those long barrels are pretty quiet with standard ammo. Coon hunters I know use long barrels to not wake up the folks they are hunting on...or trespassing on to retrieve the mutt...

P.S.: One of the shorter Marlin 39 has always been on my to-buy list, they're a fun gun and I hope I don't banned from this forum.

How about velocity boost with Velocitors, Stingers and other Hyper Velocity rounds...

BTW, I love my CZ Ultra Lux...classic old-world craftmanship.

Well, CCI Velocitors are some of the most accurate 22 rounds I've fired lately.

I actually agree. I believe the ubiquitous Marlin 39 would be a better all around .22 rifle with about a 18" to 20" barrel. I wish my 39 had a shorter barrel, that's for sure. Oh well, I've had it for so long it's not like I'm going to get rid of it.

Considering the 28" barreled .22 rifles, I have noticed that with the front sight that far out there that I can actually focus on it. Unlike shorter barreled guns with notch rear sights, my older eyes just see a blur of a front post. Of course, sight radius is the primary reason, but helping out "old dude eyes" is perhaps a side benefit.

That would be the Marlin 39 "M", with a 20" barrel.

I'm another with (and loves) the 28" CZ UltraLux. I installed BRNO front & rear aperture sights and use it for small-bore-type target shooting. Great gun. It feels to me like it balances better than my CZ Varmint, I don't have to wear hearing protection when shooting SV ammo, and it's capable of cleaning the 10-ring at 50 yards. What's not to like?

I've been told that 18 inches (or 45 centimeters) is the length of barrel that gives the correct accuracy and velocity to .22 bullets, more langth of barrel than that doesn't really do much better.

My brother tells me that a 16" barrel is the perfect length as after 16", the bullet starts to lose velocity. The longer barrel does add to more stability of the bullet tho.
Whatever -

Big or small - love 'em all!

Any .22 or any rimfire for that matter - I've made it a point to keep at least a couple of my .22's with open sights. These are typically the longer barreled ones as the pic shows - the CZ452 Special, MAS45, & Marlin 39A are all left un-scoped.
