Can someone recommend a couple of reliable .22 WMR riffles equipped with a bull barrel? Auto loading preferable but bolt action would be fine. Thanks New to THR..

The .22Mag is difficult to design an autoloader around due to its pressure curve. Thus, most designs have been problematic at best and the ones that work are expensive. The Ruger 10/22M, H&R 700, HK 300, AMT (H&R copy) are all discontinued. The Remington continues on as well as those from Magnum Research ($600-$700) and the high dollar Volquartsens ($1000+). Your best bet is the Savage 93, which tends to shoot all out of proportion to its modest price tag. CZ's are also excellent and little more refined.

Craig C What do you meen by out of "proportion" lose grouping......

There haven't been many .22 Magnum auto-loading rifles ever made. Two that come to mind are the rare and long-discontinued Kodiak and the Ruger 10/22 Magnum (also discontinued), neither of which came with a bull barrel. The only heavy-barreled .22 Magnum bolt-action rifles that I'm aware of (there may well be others that I don't know about that I'm sure better informed THR members will bring to your attention) are the Ruger 77/22 VMBZ and the CZ 452 Varmint.
And welcome to The High Road!

I mean they tend to shoot better than any $300 .22Mag has a right to. It has never been known as a particularly accurate cartridge but the Savages tend to shoot MOA out of the box. Their .17's will halve that.

thank you for clarifying. Do you have any experience with the marlin 982VS?

I know you did not mention levers, but if you want a bull barrel you could look into the Henry 22mag frontier model. I love mine and its a blast to shoot, it can be scoped to if you want.

hunterdad What is your best grouping at 100 yards

My best was .8" with a cheap Simmons 3-9x50 scope and that was a 5-shot group. That gun is far more accurate than me. The trigger on the Savages are amazing, I can't honestly say enough about this gun.

"It costs as much as the 223, lacks the power, range, penetration,
GI parts and mags, rustproof finish, luminous sights, see thru scope mounts, return to zero scope mounts of the AR, and it also lacks the .22lr conversion unit of the AK, the AR, the Mini-14, for cheap, quiet foraging and practice? "

what is the cheapest you can get .223 for now, (not including handloads)?

I have found 22 mag for about .15c a round, shipped. Also the 22 mag is a lot quieter than the .223 and not every one goes gaga for a tacticool rifle. some just like the old styles. Just my take on it.

22 mag is alot cheaper than 223 ammo here in georgia. Great post I've been looking into getting a 22 mag for bobcat and fox hunting here in georgia where centerfire rifles are illegal for those animals. Gonna be looking into the savage now. Thanks

The appeal of the .22WMR is that most states will not allow you to use centerfire rifles for most of the hunting. Only during deer season can you use centerfire. The exception to that is when hunting feral hog in my state. If it is a gun, you can use it anytime of year for piggies, day or night.

So for those shots that the .22LR will not reach, you need a .22WMR. That is the appeal of the .22WMR, and don't be fooled. The .22WMR is a proven rifle. I know what you mean though. Some cartridges just don't appeal to people. Like for me it is the .243 and .270. Wouldn't have either. If I was given either as a gift, I'd sell it, and buy a .25-06. :)
