I'm curious because I'm considering making a move to a 6 1/2 inch more tapered tube for my 29-3 and wondering if a 24-3 barrel would work. Barring any issues with the 24-3 barrel not being up to snuff to handle 44Mag pressures but somehow I doubt it would have problems.
I really prefer the lighter Model of 1950 Target Model barrel profiles and the barrel profiles that seem to mimic'd by the Mountain Gun profiles. What I'd like to do is put a 6 1/2 inch M24 barrel on my 29-3, or even a 4in M24 barrel if those barrels have the lighter profile barrel.
Currently my 29-3 wears a 4inch barrel as is, it's recoil is pretty snappy but it doesn't bother me. I doubt I'd be bothered much by a lighter 4in barrel.
I truely don't mind having something that might be mis-marked, I don't put that much value into my 29-3 in so much as keeping it original. I'm just coming to grips with whether or not I'm going to actually find a 1950s Target Model 44Spl while occupying Ca. I'm fairly certain I'll be able to land a decent 29-2 eventually and that will be a gun I'd be much more prone to keeping in original condition.
I'm kinda on my N-frame gunsmithing kick, got a fair amount of the tools needed to work on the guns and will likely purchase more in coming months as I get ready to take on a project or two. Currently I'm just trying to restore the lock up on a few guns, my 29-3 actually had a poorly fitted extractor rod which I've now corrected. My 38/44 Outdoorsman was in need of having it's barrel cylinder gap restored, simply used a .002 shim rather than stretching the crane and it was a perfect little adjustment.
Soon though, I'm thinking about changing and refitting a barrel as a fun summer project.
