I keep reading great things about the .25-06, but I'm curious--what are the real advantages that it offers over the .270?

They're both basically necked-down .30-06 cartridges, right? It seems to me that the differences in diameter between a .27 and a .25 bullet wouldn't be all that great, but I don't know much about bullet design.

Can someone enlighten me?

The .270 has a better bullet weight range for deer and larger game. The 25-06 is better suited to deer and smaller game. My uncle used a .270 for elk many seasons. Always did the job.

IMO, the 25-06 is kind of a betwixt and between cartridge. It is outperformed on the varmint side by the 6MM side, and outperformed on the medium game side by the 270/7MM. Not a bad place to be, really.

the 25 06 is one of the fastest flatest rounds out ther, not counting specialty/proprietary rounds. you get it in between 110 and 120 grns, and can shoot across the canyon, higher b.c. and s.d. than the 270 as well. this round helps you to understand what mr. Weatherby meant when he said,"speed kills".
