Help me talk someone out of a 25-06.

You'll get no help from me as I've owned a .25-06 for 30 years now and consider it just about the best all around cartridge for use in the US. The .25-06 is capable of taking varmints to deer. Some say it's to small for Elk but I don't believe that. My rifle, a 700 Remington VS is on it's second barrel.

Recoil is not bad at all in the .25 depending on what bullet weight you shoot. This cartridge can shoot bullets as light as 75 gr or as heavy as 120 gr. With the lighter bullets I have to say recoil is not bad at all. At 120 gr recoil is getting worse but no where as bad as a .30-06.

The .25-06 is also a very flat shooting cartridge. Look at the ballistics and you'll see what I mean. Mine excelled at groundhog hunting in OH. But it also went bear hunting with me in Canada. Some call it a varmint round more then a bigger game cartridge but look at the rifles chambered in .25-06. Very few varmint rifles are chambered in .25 anymore. Bullet sales are mostly 100 and 115 gr, with the varmint bullets dying out.

When I bought my .25-06 nearly 30 years ago I didn't know if the cartridge would be around very long. At the time you could only buy ammo from a gun store, and it wasn't easy to come by. I reloaded mine and that's how I started in that hobby. In 30 years I've watched this cartridge gain lots of ground with shooters. Noticed recently that even Walmart carries ammo for it.

Choose something else other then the .25-06? Not me.

.25-06 is the only bolt action that I have aside from milsurp stuff. It is an awesome rifle. I will be the first to admit that it wastes a lot of powder, but the sucker shoots so flat that I would compare it to a .204 in flatness. Its pretty cool when shooting little varmints at long range.
