257 Roberts

Well instead of buying a rifle, I decided to sell my ammo and reloading stuff.
Bummer. I was hoping to see you snag a cool rifle!

I've been on a mild quest to buy or build a 257 Roberts for a few years now. I actually have a donor 1903 Springfield in my safe in case I decide to go that route, but if I find something already finished that I like, I might be too tempted to grab it and save the Springfield for something else down the road.

I’ve got one built on an interwar era Springfield action with a Niedner barrel but late enough to be the standard Remington cartridge. My great grandfather killed a lot of hawks with an 87 gr bullet over 42.0 gr of IMR 3031 back when it was the latest thing.

On a 30-06 action, magazine length isn’t much of a problem. It’s on the project list for loading now that I have all the parts (but time, young kids seem to feed mostly on time and energy). I figure the rifle has the strength to handle a +p load (-06 chamber and a robust barrel). I just don’t see much point pushing it either. If I need more energy I can use a 30-06.
My only issue with the 06 based Wobuts is this little thing called 25-06. It also fits the same action, and I am not a restrictor plate kind of racer.

Yeah, 25-06 is probably the better way today. You can find ammo at Academy or Walmart. Not so much with 257 Roberts. In the 1930s it was the other way around.

Back in the 1980s I managed to buy two Remington 700 special edition classic rifles. One was in .350 amg and the other was a .257 R. I still have the .350 but had to sell the .257R. It broke my heart as it was one exceptionally fine rifle. I could never get it to shoot my handloads with the same precision accuracy as my two .250/3000. But it was still very accurate and delightful 24" barrel deer killer. I shot the 100 grain bullet, the same that I fired in my .250s and it was so easy to pass 3200 fps at low pressure & below max. I killed many deer with it as well as with the .350. Boy do I keenly mourn that splendid rifle.

I am considering building a .257 Bob on a Turk Model 98 small thread action that I have.

Numerick has 257 Roberts sporter barrels for small ring Mauser's in stock right now. I thought you'd like to know.

I should also mention there are some other chambering offered as well and they are in stock also.
