FWIW, Savage chambers both the mod, 11 LRH and the mod. 12 LRP Varmint in .260 Rem.
I'm debating betyween the mod 11 in .260 Rem, the mod. 111 in 6.5x284 Norma, and the Sako 85 in .260 Rem or 6.5x55 SE.
Ain't it great to have options? If Ruger or Rem made their flagships in my choice, they might get my biz, but if not, I've been very pleased with my 116 FHSAK.
In my reserch I have found that the 260 with it's very high BC 140gr bullets carries much more energy to longer ranges, it even beats the versitile 25-06 on larger game. Just make sure that you have a 1:8 Twist to stabalize the long slim 140gr bullets, with 120s or 130s it only slightly out shoots the .257 Roberts and 25-06.
The 257 Roberts is more of an ideal situation hunting round. The 25-06, 260Rem, 6.5x55 all give you an extra bit of punch when you need it for off angle shots, long shots, and larger then expected game. But the 257 will do just fine in most hunting situations.
260 is an awesome round. Versitile pretty flat and low recoil topped with the great bullet selection in 6.5mm is great from light and fast to high bc. Easy to load for etc can't go wrong with it.

I agree with D 100% The .260 is a superb choice as a hunting or target round, with a tremendous selection of hunting and target bullets available.
