I'm looking at a Black Hole Weaponry 270 Win barrel with a 1:11 twist rate. Has anyone used a 1:11 barrel? I know it will work fine for standard 130gr bullets, but am curious about stabilizing heavier/longer bullets like 140 and 150 VLDs if I want to load for longer ranges.

Berger lists their 140 as stable with 1/11, and these are used in 6.8 SPC too, so you should be fine there with the higher velocity.

Berger stability calculator shows 'marginal stability' with 140s and 150s and a 1/11 twist.
Seems counterproductive to look at a slower than average twist and longer than average bullets.

I have owned about 6 rifles, and 2 pistols chambered in .270 Win. All of them were 1-10 rifling. I can't respond to your question, but I personally would not purchase any .270 Win in a twist-rate other than 1-10 for hunting. Mine worked well with 90, 100, 130, 140 and 150 grain projectiles.

That makes me ask, why buy or offer a 1-11? That sounds like a barrel made for 90 and 100 grain projectiles for varmint.

JMHO,

That is exactly what I was thinking, as is the 120 grain, .277 caliber projectile. I wouldn't use that for hunting medium or big game, and as such I didn't list it. Though, it might be fantastic for varmints.

Interested to know the standard twist rate of most manufactures. Any take on what Jack O'Conner, the .270 guru, preferred? I' kind of interested in getting one myself.

Standard is generally a 1:10 twist. I think the BHW barrels are 1:11 because that is the twist rate they use for their .277 blanks, whether they get made into a 6.8 AR barrel or a 270 Win barrel. The BHW 3 groove poly rifling shoots very accurately with higher than average velocity and is super easy to clean. Usually I wouldn't consider the barrel because of the twist offered but I've had good experiences with the company.

As a side note, I calculated ballistics based on a 150 VLD at 2900fps and a 135 SMK at 3100fps. The SMK only dropped about 10" more at 1000yds and arrived going about 200fps slower.

I don't have a manual handy, but the Berger reloading manual tells you what the twist rates should be for their bullets.

If you don't have access to one, PM me and I will get back to you. QM
