About three weeks ago I decided it was time to get my Mossberg 100 ATR in 270 win out of the safe and rework some loads. I dont have any of my old load data because it was saved on my last computer, which crashed. The last time I had it out was a few years before I sold the gun. I rebought it a year or so later. I was out of the last batch of ammo I loaded for it. I remembered everything I used except the charge weight and col.
I took the scope off the gun about a year ago to loan to another rifle. After shopping around i got a Bushnell Banner with a six inch eye releif. The long eye relief was what sold me on the scope, since I normally have to use extended rings. I mounted the scope and used blue lock tite. I also gave the gun a good cleaning.
When I worked up the loads I didnt start at the min load since I was using the same componets as my last batch. I also didnt start at the max load. I set the bullet a little off the lands (about .015) with varying amounts of H4831sc, 130 grain hornady sp, and Win LR primer. The weekend before last was my first range visit with this gun in a few years. In fact it hasnt been out of my gun safe since my motorcycle crash. My shoulder is still messed up a little so I mounted the gun firmly in a rifle rest to take out as much human variable as possible.
I was really disappointed after shooting these loads. I cant remember exactly how tight a group this economy rifle shot, but it seems like it was alot smaller. It had about a 2.5 to 3 inch horzonal side to side string in the three shot group. Vertically the loads were printing ok at about 2 inches. These were at 100 yards. I got to tinking that maybe it was me at first, but when I got my weatherby 7mm mag out, it grouped at a little less than an inch.
This past weekend I loaded and shot another test batch. I got to thinking since I couldnt remember the COl I used years ago, I would load these to what hornady #7 suggested. These loads had almost a 45 degree angle string with the higher shot further to the left. I am using sight in targets that has the one inch grids. These groups had more verticle distance than the last batch.
My scope and mounts was and still is tight. I can't really say it is the scope because the groups prints similar to each other. It is a new untested scope. I dont really know if it is the gun since I cant really remember how well it shot. It may have always shot this way and its my standards that have changed. My 7mm mag grouped my 139 sp, 162 sp, and remington's core lok 150 in a tighter group shooting them together.
I was began to think that I should try a heavier bullet, but I find it hard to believe that one doesnt like a 130 grain bullet with H4831sc. Also the trigger pull on my ATR is ALOT heavier and maybe I need to relearn it.
ANY IDEAS?
