So I was given a Stevens Model 20 from a family member and I don't know a thing about them. It is a 2 3/4 chamber 20 gauge with a 28" barrel (and a silver bead front sight?). The wood is in OK shape, but the steel is bare metal, with the exception of the last few inches from the muzzle.

I was told it doesn't fire half the time, so a new spring and pin are going to be in order. I was also told it "destroys" game.....guessing it has a nice full choke (fixed) to it.

So, I usually take guns like this and have my gunsmith make 'em like new, even though I know it's not 'worth' the cost. Smooth old shotgun......any thoughts about me having it re-blued and the furniture refinished?

If you want to spend the money on it, knowing it will never sell for enough to recoup your investment, go for it. I don't know how much sentimental value it might have to you or other family members, but that's always a valid consideration.

It's a soldly made pre-WW2 shotgun, a JMBrowning design revamped a bit to make it fit in with the streamlined receiver era (the older 520 is a typical Browning humpback). And it has the best bar none takedown system I know of on any pumpgun.

Enjoy it no matter what you decide...

Pull the bolt, the firing pin just kinda floats in there, no spring and no disconnect, could be gunked up or damaged , you can get a new FP for about 20 bucks,, I changed mine when I got it,, great guns

Having no disconnect makes them able to slam fire,, which is mucho fun

They don't have a disconnector ... but they do have an 'interruptor' which, so long as parts aren't worn, will prevent the gun from firing until the bolt is closed and locked.

Best make sure it functions properly before commencing slam fire...
