I have the opportunity to buy a .280 AI at a very good price. I have looked around and brass and ammo are non existent. I'm intrigued by the cartidfe but don't want something I can't shoot. Internet lore seems to say that shooting .280 Rem out of it will be A. Perfectly fine and B. Form the brass into .280 AI. Is this true? Do any of you use one? Your opinion if you do would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Ben

Never owned one, but the above is true. You can shoot standard ammo from any of the AI conversions. Once you do so you have formed brass for the AI chambering to re-load. You gain a little powder capacity and 50-75 fps in most cases over standard cartridges.

No problem with .280 AI, Nosler now offers both loaded ammo and formed brass. The .280 Imp, by the way, is one of the all time best "improved" cartridges, with performance getting close to 7mm Mag.

You should be aware that every 280 AI is not necessarily the same. The wildcat version was tamed recently by Nosler, and the new SAAMI spec version has different headspace than the older wildcat version. Nosler and Kimber rifles are chambered to the SAAMI spec version, and Nosler ammo and brass is SAAMI spec. I suggest you search rifleshootermag for an article written by Layne Simpson in 2012 for a proper analysis of the differences. I'm sure there are other articles as well.

I read the article. Thank you. So can a saami spec rifle fireform.280 Remington by simply firing it?
