3/4oz loads in 28ga vs 20ga... Is there any discernible difference between the two on the skeet field?

I enjoy shooting my 28ga, but I don't want to leave anything "in the bag" simply because I enjoy it. Given the same load, will 20ga have a better pattern or shorter shot string? If so, is the difference enough to really be a difference? Thanks!

The 20ga will have a shorter shot string. I don't know about patterns when it pertains to a moving target. I would suppose that if a pattern has a hole in it on a stationary target, it would be elongated when arriving at a moving target. But this is only my take. I can't prove it.

In theory, the 20 should be better, but I don’t know how much shot column length really matters vs individual barrel/hull/wad/choke combinations.

My skeet mentor says there is no difference. He mainly shoots a .410.

But 2Xs I’ve seen him get pissed at his shooting, pick up a 12, and go clean.

I’ve only seen the 12 in his hands twice and he’s 48/48.

So, although he tells me it doesn’t make a difference, somewhere deep inside, he knows it does.

Yep as Yogi Berra said. "In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they ain't"

Interesting question…I’ve been shooting 3/4oz. in 12, 20 and 28 for years in skeet and for the last 3 years in 5-stand and sporting clays. What I’ve found out as the saying goes…if I do my part the shells do theirs. I’ve noticed no difference in scores…maybe I picked up a couple birds with heavier loads, but to me the punishment they give isn’t worth it. I mainly shoot the 12 with a 9# gun and the recoil is around a 22mag, basically nothing.

To answer your question, at skeet distance nothing will change, for skeet I run SKT top and bottom, with 5-stand and sporting I’m running IM top and bottom. Close stuff is dust, 45yd stuff breaks solid. I think the pattern is better in the 12 and 20 over the 28, my scientific reasoning…higher scores with the 12 and 20 over the 28. I need to add the 20 and 28 is with a two-barrel gun a little over 6#, where my 12 is tubed at about 9#...I cannot remember the last time I shot either of the sub-gauge tubes out of it since getting the barreled set.
