What do you guys consider the "Best Buys" out there for rifle, pistol and, shotgun for Self Defense/Home Defense. Please feel free to tell us why you picked what you picked. If you feel one gun should get special mention for its ability to double duty in another role then mention it.:D This is for fun but it might also serve as a guide for those of us that want something that they are not all that familiar with. Remember that price is a consideration so state what we can reasonably expect to pay today on the new or used maket. Feel free to site your sources. Remember, this is a list of guns for self defense that would make you feel reasonably well armed. Here are my picks:

Handgun: Used Glock 22, 23 17 $350-$400 Summitgunbroker.com regularly has a supply of good used glocks with and without nite sites for under $400.

Rifle: My current rifle in this role is an Olymic Arms PCR-16 for which I paid $600 new 2 years ago. It is extremely accurate and therefore can do double duty as a hunting rifle for anything up to deer sized game. If I were on tight budget I would not hesitate to get a New Saiga in 223 for just under $300.

Shotgun: This one is tough for me because "what I like" and "what I know to be good dependable firearms" are at odds with each other. Forget the used market for a moment, tonight at Wal-mart I saw a Mossberg 500 in Cammo for $189 and a Remington 870 with laminated stock for $230 after rebate. I know that the 500 is a good dependable gun but, unless we are talking about the 590, I prefer the remington 870. That said, I feel the Best buy is the Mossber 500 for under $200 OTD. Getting into the used market, you can sometimes find the old Police marked 870 Wingmasters for around $200 and the next time I see one I am buying it.:D

My final choices on a tight budget are:

Hangun:Used Glock 23 <$400
Rifle: New Saiga 223 <$300
Shotgun: used 870/new Mossy 500 $200

Total: $900 app.

I shot my first few with a G19, a Romanian AK and a Moss 500 pursuader.

Guns are cheap, ammo is cheap and I did quite well with them.

I've since gone to a Bushmaster AR but I'll be keeping the shotty and the G19, most likely.

If we are going for absolute rock bottom :

H&R single shot 12 ga.
Hi Point .45
Mosin Nagant M44

More reasonable:

SKS
Mossy 500
Bursa 380

If you had the money and yet didn't want to spend a fortune
AR
Kimber 1911 or Glock
same Mossy 500 but shortened with a light and butt cuff.

Oops!

I did not mean for this thread to be about guns for 3 gun matches.:what: Although I guess I could shoot it with the guns that I have mentioned. If I were to go to a match I would take my:
3rd Gen. G 23 that I bought for $350:D
My Oly arms PCR-16 $600:D
My synthetic stocked 1100 $350:D
Total: $1300

Heh, earlier today I was thinking of posting asking about bargain basement/making do option for three gun the game. Guess I sorta' got that thread after all.

45ACP Springfield GI Edit 1911 $399
M1 Carbine from the CMP loaded with Georgia Arms soft points $400ish
Mossberg 500 $200

I like the SKS for the rifle.

Personally I would go with a used or surplus CZ 75B for the pistol. That could also be had in the $3-400 range.

Since you are specifying low budget, these two have the advantage of inexpensive ammo (except for the SKS ammo which has had a hopefully temporary price surge recently).

For the shotgun, why not a good old Rem 870? Easy to find used for low $.

Glock
AK
870

or

S&W revolver
Marlin lever action
870

Either will do if you will.

For Shotgun either a NIB Mossberg 500 , or a Maverick 88 (Same as the Mossberg 500) or a used Police 870, if possible or regular 870. Only real difference is the location of the controls and that's mostly personal preference. Make sure that which ever one you choose fits you well.

All are dependable chioces, provided you do you part by BA/UU/R.

The only thing I disagree with is your choice of Glock. I'd take a G17 as 9mm is a lot cheaper, available anywhere, and not a heck of a lot less than a 40.

I would take a 4" Ruger, Taurus, S&W, or Colt 357 for a handgun. You can do anything (including deer size game) with that and have a variety of power levels available to you.

Depends on the budget, here is a good list of possible choices.

Pistol options:

Bersa Thunder .380acp
Ruger SP101
Springfield XD-9
Glock 17/19

Rifle:

SKS
SU-16
Marlin .30/30, or .44mag, .357mag.

Shotgun:

Mossberg 500
Rem 870
Maverick.

under a grand:

S&W M&P9 - $425 OTD at a gun show
Maverick 88 - $175 OTD at a show
rifle - yeah, I guess a Saiga would be hard to beat here. Would like better sights, though. (wait, are there high-cap mags for the 5.56 Saiga?)

Budget guns is all I own, so I think I'm uniquely qualified to answer this question. :)

Handgun: A used or new Arcus 94, which may be the all-around best BHP out there. I paid $180 for mine, used. New they are somewhere in the mid-to high $200's; very high quality and reliability. And 9mm ammo is still cheap.

Rifle: SKS or Saiga in 7.62 X39 for between $180 and $280. I like the round better than .223, and the ammo is reasonably cheap and now again in good supply.

Shotty: Any of the usual suspects in pump-action. They are all good and close enough in price. But, for a little more, I'd go for the Saiga 12 ga. semi-automatic with 8 or 10-shot mags. A reliable semi-auto makes more sense than a pump-action, especially during stress. You're used to simply pulling the trigger to chamber the next round from your handgun and rifle. You may not remember to pump the shotty and lose a critical second or two. The faster reloading with magazines is also nice to have.

Makarov pistols-Gunbroker usually has some pretty nice ones for $250-$350.
Mossberg Maverick shotgun.
I don't own one yet, but am thinking about getting a Yugo AK, underfolder.

Hi Point .45

I would not buy one or suggest anyone else buy one. I have seen three that failed catestrophically. Ony one of the three actually injured the shooter, but one suffered a broken - not cracked - broken frame after 37 rounds fired.

There is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only are this man's lawful prey. ~John Ruskin

Handgun:

If you like revolvers, an old Model 10, 13, 19, or their stainless versions. Used Rugers (Security Six I hear a lot about)... a perfectly working model goes for around $300-$350.

If you prefer semis: Glocks are nicely priced - so are CZ 75s. For smaller calibers, you can get a brand-new CZ 83 for about $350. Surplus models go for closer to $200. PA-63s are out there, and I've heard they work just fine. Makarovs are there, GI45s are (or were) $400. Used to see pretty low-priced Beretta 92s for close to $400. Cop-surplus guns can generally go for very good prices. Glocks, Sigs, Smiths....

Rifles:

AR-180b for around $600 - about a hundred higher or so and you can build your own AR-15. I expect used Mini 14s should be close to that or cheaper.

SU-16s are nicely priced. AKs in .223, 5.45, and 7.62x39 are very, very nicely priced.

Shotguns:

Mossberg 500, Remington 870. Around $300 or less.

lets see if i can play,,,,

s&w m64 38spl ss revo $250 max
chicom sks used $150 lowend
used moss 500 18.5 12g $175-$200

total $575-$600 not too bad

id avoid highpoints like the plague spoty quality besides if you dont like ex leo wheelguns the ex leo autos are a hundred more

My final choices on a tight budget are:

Hangun:Used Glock 23 <$400
Rifle: New Saiga 223 <$300
Shotgun: used 870/new Mossy 500 $200

Total: $900 app.

Looks like good choices to me, personal preference would put an M&P in place of the Glock.

.

All were used when I got them:

Ithaca 37 for $60
Savage 16 .308 Win for $250, telescopic sight $120
USP .45 $500

$680 total. Beat that.

:)
