There is just something sooooo very right about the 5" and 3" S&W's....

Heres a 66-3 in a 3" barrel...

Must be the odd barrel lengths, fit my odd personality:D

I agree with you Giz.

Odd or Evens --- in N-Frames and K-Frames S&W's, I love the odds in barrel lengths!!! :)

Great looking M-66. Thanks for sharing the pics.

P.S. that must be a new rock -- I don't remember it!! :D

I agree

I agree on your good opinion of the 3 inch model 66. I was lucky enough to buy this one a couple of months ago, and the balance is excellent:

Looking Good Gizamo! What kind of gunleather is that?

My thoughts exactly. Seems tough to find holsters for 3" k frames. That one's just what I'm looking for.

The three-inch, in particular, looks better proportioned to the rest of the gun than does the 2 1/2", and also allows a full-length ejector rod for better extraction and ejection of magnum cases, whereas the 2 1/2" version sometimes falls short even with .38 Spl. cases.

But a nice sense of esthetics. :)

I heard that the 66 wasn't made in a 3" except for LE contracts, like the CHiPs contract... They didn't sell the "retail" NIB. Could be wrong, but I also love 3" revolvers... I guess cuz you don't see many of them.

MOST of the limited runs of the 3" Model 66 were for commercial sales, not LE.

Mine was a limited 2500?? gun run made for Ashland Shooter's Supply in the late 1980's.

The leather in gizamo's picture looks like a DeSantis Speed Scabbard. I have several and they are very good holsters, comfortable for all day carry too.

Three-Inch Barrels

The three-inch M-66's were released periodically as special orders for various distributors, the last ones being released through RSR. I was surprised to learn a few months ago that there had even been some limited releases of M-19's with three-inch barrels. The three-inch M-66's I own were definitely sold NIB individually. I'm not sure it it's totally accurate to say that mine were sold "retail" as each was specifically ordered for me from the distributor by an obliging FFL. (I'm not aware of a CHP-issue three-inch revolver but invite correction.)

Three-inch-barreled K-frame revolvers were much more common in fixed-sight versions, with the FBI having issued both M-19's and M-65's in that configuration. I own a DeSantis OWB holster, with thumb-break that was ordered for a three-inch M-66 but was actually boned, albeit loosely enough to fit an M-66, for an M-19 or M-65.

While M-36-s were not uncommon in the three-inch variation, with fixed sights, there were a couple of M-60 versions with three-inch underlug barrels and adjustable sights - the M-60-4, as I recall, in .38 Special, and the M-60-10, in .357 Magnum. I have seen one of each of these in hands of a couple of my students. I suspect that there were also a few three-inch M-36's made with adjustable sights.

ArchAngelCD has it correct. DeSantis...:)

And it is a very comfortable carry. I agree ~ half again the effort in finding a holster ~ as finding a 3" gun....
