hey all. I recently inherited a 1921 Model 12 Winchester 12 guage pump, a Topper M48 16g and a J. Stevens .410.

the Topper has no sn... not ground off, but from factory. can anyone explain why or what this means ?

the Stevens .410 is a 3+1 magazine bolt action accepting 2.5 and 3" shells as stated on barrel. I bought a new magazine from Numrich, and I am concerned a 2.5" wont load correctly. 3" shells load and eject cleanly. any advice?

Serial numbers were only required by law after 1968. Before then it was common for manufacturers not to bother with serial numbers, especially on inexpensive guns. It's illegal to remove a serial number, but if the gun is pre-68 one is not required.

It's not clear, have you actually tried a 2.5" shell and it won't feed or are you just concerned that it might not?

Those stamped sheet metal magazines used in the .410 are problematic to say the least. If it feeds 3" shells reliably call it good. It would probably take some tweaking to feed 2 1/2's then might not handle the 3" ones.

Boith the H&R and the Stevens are utility grade shotguns, inexpensive hunting guns, used mainly either by beginners or by those who couldn't afford, or chose not to buy, a "better" gun. I put "better" in quotes because the term is subjective; a Topper might well be a near ideal gun for the owner's purpose and hunting style.
