30-06 load; considering 2 powders

I had had success with IMR4064 with 150 grain and under bullets, and IMR4350 with bigger bullets. Never had and need for magnum primers, both powders burn well and are clean and capable of great groups with patient load ups. My whitetail choice is IMR4350 with 165 grain Nosler Partition.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

In the load you described are you using standard primers?

All I know is the two powders I asked about are on the list in both of my books and the discount is extremely deep, like 50%. Therefore, I thought maybe I could give them a try, but then I saw the * that said using magnum primers so I came here to ask.

Again, thanks everyone. I am in no rush on this. I have about 100 rounds of factory 30-06 sitting around, but I have the dies and few hundred pieces of brass that was once fired in my rem 700.
Hot Chili Powder here.....I DO NOT use magnum primers.....FYI

I've used H380 and H414 for the ol '06 and both did an adequate job.
My Weatherby Vanguard loves H380 with 165 grain bullets.

I remember being at the range talking to the guy at the bench next to me, who was also a handloader. He asked about my load and I told him. His response was, "Isn't H380 a little fast for a bullet that big?"
Then I put on my muffs and put 3 shots in a ragged hole. He looked surprised.
I killed several deer with that load too, and they never complained about my powder choice.

Just looked in my Speer #13 and #14, both have asterisk marking loads that magnum primers. Speer is about the only one that I know of that shows standard or magnum primers for different powders. I don't know why that is. Speer generally uses CCI primers in their loads and they test their loads and designate which primers was used. From what I understand they use magnum primers with ball powders to flash through the more densely packed powder. Extruded powders like 4895, 4064, 3031, 4350 don't pack as tight and a regular primer will flash through and reliably ignite the powder. If you use a chronograph you can test and see if it makes a difference. The wider the spread, the more inconsistent the ignition of the powder the more inaccurate it will be.
Looking at several burn charts IMR 4895 is faster than 4320, 4064, 4350 and 4831. The powders that are faster are 3031 and 4198.
My favorite load for the 30-06, at the moment, is IMR 4350 under the Speer 165 btsp.

IMR 4350 + Sierra No. 2160 (180 Gr SBT) + CCI #200 Primer

I have never really experimented with different loads for 30 06. Just searched the internet for the most common recommendations and settled on IMR 4350. The Sierra 2160 shoots straight enough for me and is reasonably priced. And I just love CCI based on their overall quality. Anyway, this combination has never failed me at either the range or in the field. Good luck.
