30-30 for hog defense

170 grs Core-lokt will go through both shoulders or end to end any sub 200 lbs hog barring the freakish. It will most certainly break a shoulder.

Not sure where "defense" comes into it. There are very few situations in which a hog will charge. If there were conditions in which I thought that would somehow regularly be the case, a 12 ga pump and Brenekke hard cast slugs would offer more shock and awe.

In my opinion, a 30-30 lever gun is about ideal as a hog slayer for walking up hunting.
Don’t ya just hate those darn spell checkers, putting words in our mouths...............

I have killed about 120 of them and the problem is, if you are on the ground with them, that you may encounter one larger than 120 lbs, SO I would say that if you have a choice the 30-30 would be about the 'smallest' caliber I would suggest. I have killed them with 223, 30-30, 35 Rem (one of my favorites), 7-08, 308, 35 Whelen and shotgun slugs. Just use a heavy well built bullet if you anticipate an encounter with a BIG hog. You can always kill a little hog with a big gun, but it can be a problem trying to kill a big hog with a little gun!;)

Damn man, that’s a lot of pork.

Wish we had them up here, tho we get small batches here and there. But we are not allowed to shoot them anyway. On the other hand i have seen the damage they do, even the turkey can damage a field in one night.
I am hungry for pork now.

I wish we DID NOT have them here!!!:( They are simply 'eating machines' and they destroy everything in their path. Most of the ones I have killed were killed over bait, some with night vision, and we do get some in traps. But they are getting wise to the traps so we do not get many in the traps any more.

Well if I had the means id come and shoot a few. I would like to plan a hunt this coming year.

It is hard to 'hunt' them here becasue the woods are so dense and they move with the food sources. We may not see them for weeks or months in a certain area then they reappear. That is why we use bait and game cameras to make 'appointments' with them. ;) I live near a 'wilderness area' which restricts the hunting and thus the hogs have a 'home base' or a place to breed and when they out grow their food sources they come out allover the place.

The coyote do the same thing here. You will only see/hear a few then about once a month they will be all over.

I wouldn’t mind them as much if they were not so destructive. It can take many, many hours and hundreds of dollars in fuel to fix what they can do in a single night, to a smooth hay meadow.

Forget the fact they will run everything else off a feeder and camp out.

I've seen turkeys do the same think here. Any chance you could fit a piglet in a flatrate box lol

You know the 30-30 was what our grandparents or father's used to hunt everything with. So yes it'll take care of hogs, deer, and bear. Although if going after bear I want something alittle powerful.

Will a 30-30 shooting a 170 grain core-lokt out break a 120 pound hog's shoulder on a frontal shot ?

If you are going to be in thick stuff with limited visibility, use a 12 gauge (not gallon) pump with 00 buckshot. Take it from someone who needed it in head-high palms to drop a hog at 5 feet. I couldn't see it until then, I could just hear it snorting and squealing as it chased my spaniel back between my legs.

There is not a pig alive smarter than my dog.
Never the less, it wouldn't hurt to fix bayonets before heading to the river bottoms.

My dog understands English, I swear she does. :D She's a little dumb, though, when it comes to pigs. When we catch one in the trap, she goes nuts barking and growling. "Let me at it, daddy, I'll tear it limb from limb." She's really brave when the pig is in a trap. She's 90 lbs and 20 lbs of that is pure fat.

I hunt pigs with a 7.62x39, basically a semi auto .30-30. I shoot 154 grain soft point stuff. It works great. It's a semi-auto, so there's another on tap as soon as it fires, but I've yet to need it on the same pig.
