What powders have YOU had good results with in the .30-30?

Specifically a model '94, 150gr corelokt, Win or Fed LR primers, and R-P brass?

By good results, I mean tight groups. Velocity is not a big deal. 2000fps is the max I'd be interested in.

All I've tried is IMR4895 at charges up to 32 grains. Not really happy with the results yet. Velocity was around 2050, so that's fine. I'm getting 3" groups at 50 yards. :(

IMR4895
Varget

I also have H1000, and IMR4831, but these aren't really appropriate for the .30-30.
 
I have used IMR 4064 with good results in a 336 w/ 150 grain Hornady RNSP, but compression is pretty severe if that is a concern. My go to propellant of choice is WW748 in the 30/30.
 
I tested a bunch of powders last fall and found IMR4895 to be the best at 50 yards with my model 94 but all powders were very close to being the same at around 2 inch groups. My hunch is that the gun is probably doing better than that but my shooting with the open sights is the bigger problem. I was suprised to even do that well. You could try the Varget and 4064 to see what happens. Forget the 4831s. If you want to buy another powder you may want to try some Reloader 15. It gave me some decent groups and very good velocity.
 
W-748...Never shot my test rounds to see what they would do at 50 yards, but I'm getting 3 rounds in a 3" dot at 100 yards. 32 grains of W-748 under a 170 grain Speer FNSP in a Winchester or Remington case properly trimmed primed with CCI- 200 and firmly crimped...2050 to 2100 fps...From an older (pre-fifties) Winchester mod 94 .30WCF...

Olin 748 has always been my choice with a LR magnum primers.I use the Hornady's manual for their data. Byron
 
748 is my preferred 30-30 powder. i get 2250-ish f/s w/ 150 sierra fp's, actual 200 yard velocity of 1698 (about 950 pounds of energy at the target), and w/ a scope the groups are under 1.5" at 200 (about 5" w/ open sights).

second favorite powder is varget. it gets a little more velocity, gives up a bit of accuracy.
 
748 is hard to beat, but if you haven't tried it, X-terminator will give you some very good loads, as well.;)
 
Hogdon H335. Work up to the max load(33 grains IIRC, not near my manuals/notes at the moment)

Six different winchester 94 30-30s in the family will put 5 of them in one hole at 25 yards, and under an inch at 50, with iron sights. And fast as well, around 2200 fps.

The only difference is I'm using sierra 150s instead of remington slugs.
 
Another vote for 748.Very small volcity sprreads,which help result in good accuracy.
Howeer this is with 170 grain fp gc bullets.You'll just have to try it with ur bullets to really know.
 
Winchester 748 is the powder for the 30-30 IMO.
Charge 34.4gr 748 with a Winchester primer under a 150gr bullet and you will get more velocity than you are looking for and an accurate round.
 
start with 30gr. of H380and work it up to around 33-34 gr. My 30-30 likes 32.5gr. of H380 and sierra 150gr. bullet. It isnt a published load but an old timer told me to try it and Im happy with it.
 
Oops. Made a mistake. I have H4198, not H4831. :eek:

Anybody have good results using H4198? I've had success with using it for .45-70.

The only powder I've ever used for jacketed bullet loads in the .30-30 is IMR3031. 30 grains of 3031 duplicates the factory load with 170 grain bullets.

I use IMR4895 for reduced loads with cast 311041 bullets. 27.5 grains gives me 1800 fps with a bullet I make in the garage.

However, lots of folks are using Varget with great results in the .30-30. I'm still using up old stocks of powder and may try varget when I run out.
 
Jeez, talk about varying opinions. That is what is so amazing about reloading is finding the load your rifle likes best. IMR 3031 is kind of the classic powder, at least around here. I've used it with good results with both 150 and 170g loads.
 
30-30 Win. 94 Mod

I use AA 2460. Have had great luck shooting tight groups with a variety of bullets and have also had great luck bringing down game in the woods.

As mentioned, you may want to try a few different powders. I started with the old 3031 powder. Wouldn't group woth a hoot in my win 94.

I had a can of h335 sitting there that I use in 223. Noticed a load listed for the 30-30. So I worked up a bunch to try out. Magic. Never looked back.

Your gun may show a prefrence for a different powder.
 
30/30 Powder

I use IMR 3031 in my 170 grain bullets. Really like that combonation. I use Re7 in lighter bullets. It seems to like that powder also. I load 32.5g of Re7 in a 110 grain bullet for "stump" shooting, if you will, and have found that this load in MY RIFLE will reach out to 500 yards quite effectively with borderline pressure signs. If you wish to use the Re7 in this load please work up to it. I find it quite fun to plink at 500 yards with open sights.
