300 PRC or 30 Nosler

I've often wondered about meaningful bullet length when there are plastic tips involved. In terms of bullet stability, is the 1.866" length of the Barnes bullet meaningful or does the bullet react like a 1.750" bullet since the tip is significantly less dense than the the copper?

Read somewhere to deduct the tip length from the OAL for Stability Calculations.

Like @horsey300 said, The Jbm calc has a place to enter the tip length. I honestly haven't tried to play with it that much tho.
I've tried a few of the "marginal" bullets (as listed by both Bergers calc and JBM) and found that marginal can shoot really well, at least at the ranges I've tested. I've also found that it can be a complete failure, really depends on the rifle I guess.

Tend to stay with the traditional heavy-for-caliber bullets that make the std. length cartridges punch above their weight.

...at reasonable (< 350 yds) hunting ranges.

But that's just me.

:D

I think both 300 PRC and 30 Nosler would benefit from bullets being seated further out, if the rifle design will accommodate that.
Last year I formed 450/400 brass to create a rimmed clone of 30 Nosler for a falling block rifle. Picture below: 450/300 on left, 30 Nosler on right. Note 450/300 has longer neck and the advantage of seating bullet (200 grn Barnes TSX) further out.

@Nature Boy

Thank you for the reply I don’t mean to annoy anyone I’m just really excited to see this one through it would be really really nice imho to see a good blued and walnut rifle for a change most have went to more modern options and the single shot target action intrigues me I can’t wait to see her all finished up!
