Would the 300 Winny be too big for varmints???:what:
Or do they have to be 300 lbs or better??:)

Why not? I would think a 300 WinMag would be alright for something like Prairie Dogs, or something you are going to kill, but not necessarily eat or use the pelt. It shoots flat, and it's good to a thousand yards or so. . I also doubt that the ammunition is really anymore expensive.

Well, it would certainly do the job...It's kinda like if I used my 444 Marlin though-when the smoke clears, you will have to look for patches of fur on the ground to see if you hit it, cause there won't be much else left...

I know they don't work worth a dam on grouse, I was trying to take the head off and hit low, found a couple feathers:what:

the 110 ballistic tip would do some damage on gofers but will be hard on the bore going 3700+

You can load that win mag down a bit. You can also use a lighter bullet. Why waste a barrel on a prarie dog. Why shoot full power loads and waste the barrel? Load the rounds down just a tad.

Possibly

I think you might find the results a bit disappointing. Something faster, and with less stout bullets would be more dramatic.

That is unless you load up some 125 gr NBT nice and hot.

45-70 gets it done on upstate NY woodchucks:D. People will punch long range paper with big rifles, why not control some pests? It's a much greater challenge shooting chucks at 500+yards than a target, and a larger bullet ensures a quick kill, compared to overranging something small, I would trust a 1000yd shot with a 300mag for a clean kill, over a 200yd shot with 17hmr

You're kidding, right?
It would be painful, expensive, and theatric.
You're NOT kidding!
I also doubt that the ammunition is really anymore expensive.
No more expensive than a genuine varmint round like .223 or 22-250? You MUST be kidding.

Yeah, I'm kidding too. :D

I suspect that your .300 Win Mag would turn a prairie dog into a fine red mist. I doubt that there would be fur patches left. On the other hand, why not? I've always been a devotee of blessed excess.

A little excessive, but I don't see why not. Heck if it's the most accurate gun you have, use it.

Just think about it. The proverbial "all around rifle" must be powerful enough for your biggest, toughest target and accurate enough for your most distant target. Anything smaller or closer is just gravy (eww.) and good practice.

Sandy [Scottish brougue]: Carl I want you to kill all the gophers on the golf course
Carl: Correct me if I'm wrong Sandy, but if I kill all the golfers they'll lock me up and throw away the key.
Sandy: Not golfers, you great git! Gophers, the little brown, furry rodents!
Carl: We can do that. We don't even need a reason.
Sandy: Ayye! Well do it, man!
Carl: OK, but why don't we do the same thing, but with gophers?
[Sandy storms off]
Carl: It's not my fault nobody can understand you.

License to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. Man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet-Cong...Varmint-Cong. So you have to fall back on superior firepower and superior intelligence. And that's all she wrote.

Beautiful. :D

garden gnome, 100yds, 460S&W mag, nothing but dust

Well, I thought those "roaming gnome" adverts were annoying too but...
wasn't that a bit excessive? Did you at least give a warning shot?

Think of the poor little gnomes without a father figure. :sniff:
