.308 AR Optics, Aimpoint or Eotech

I currently have a Leupold VX-III on a Bushmaster .308 ORC, I am inundated with hogs and trying to put them on the endangered species list . I am thinking about an Aimpoint Pro or the Eotech 552 with .308 ballistic reticle. I am looking for faster target acquisition cause after the first shot they scatter and finding them in a regular scope aint easy. Any opinions on these 2 red dots on an AR like this. thanks.

Never used either of the two that you mention. I did have an aimpoint before and was happy with it.

The Eotech is nice, I have used them and liked how they performed. Without magnification your range will be limited for precise shots but if you are just wanting to poke holes in them then the Eotech should be fine.

The AP is more "scope like".

I thought the ET was faster to use CQ. I would think the ET might be better on running hogs.YMMV.

Aimpoint PRO for under $400 is hard to beat.

I've seen too many EoTechs die while shooting for me ever to recommend them.

I have used an Eotech on my AR (5.56) for hogs multiple times. It works great for shots on the movers, and making the first shot a neck shot isn't difficult.

I have never used an Aimpoint for this purpose, but I have used them. To me, there was just too much 'scope' in my FOV. The tube of the optic just seemed to take up too much space in my vision.

That being said, I would recommend the Eotech. However, some eye problems cause the reticle to be troublesome so I would recommend looking through one before purchasing if possible.

If you're using an Aimpoint like a scope, you're doing it wrong. Without fail, every soldier I have ever given remedial training to has increased his marksmanship score when I got him to stop using the Aimpoint like a scope.

TexasPatriot.308, If I were shopping for a 1x optic, it'd probably be an Aimpoint. They're hard to beat for reliability.

Eotech's sight picture is great with both eyes open with every little frame visible. It makes for quick target acquisition. However, at 1x you loose range. I have shot my eotech out to 450 yards. Easy on a 20: gong, but I would not suggest it for hunting. Maybe 200 for hunting.

You might want to think about a 1-4x scope with a cat tail for quick zooming. At 1x you can shoot with both eyes open and find targets rather easily and you have the option of 4x for further out. Nikon African Monarch 1-4x is a great scope. I use one for 3 gun. 1x both eyes open and 4x out to 300 yards on 12" plates. Easy.

the only red dot I have used is an Ultradot on a mini 30 and really like it, I am an old grunt having served in early 70s so didnt use anything but irons in combat. I know how a red dot is supposed to be used with both eyes open, and somehow looking thru a tube and using an optic like an Eotech would be different still for this old wardog. I have been leaning towards the holographic Eotech...thanks to all yall for yalls input. still undecided and I got so many hogs to kill. for now using my M1A with irons.

On pigs 200 pounds and less past 200 yards the dot is going to cover most of the pig so your probability of miss is going to be substantially higher than your VXIII.

My suggestion is to keep your scope and turn the magnification down. I use a Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20 on my DPMS AP4 and can usually get several pigs before they get out of sight.
These were taken at 240 yards in rapid succession.

Having used both...

Aimpoint has been more responsive in customer service. Battery life is now amazingly long and touch as nails. The lenses are easy to protect with covers provided and easy to safely clean should they get dirty. Co-witnessing is an Aimpoint design priority.

The Eotech is a good sight but all of mine have had a self-destructive tendency when stored for long periods of time with batteries installed seemingly regardless of battery manufacturer. The lenses don't have very easy access should they need fast-safe cleaning and I'm not a fan of their version of adjustment buttons at all.

it sounds nice, but you dont want a hog infestation. you cant drive a pickup or a tractor thru the pasture without getting your head jammed into the roof of the cab. when the feeders go off, if hogs are nearby, they clean out the corn before the deer get there. at night they will even come into yards and root em up. we got a highway (toll road) near us with an 85 mph speed limit. the plannerss were not thinking about the pig bomb here, just had a pickup overturned after running over a pack of hogs a few nights ago. they are fun to hunt and kill though...taking my M1A out tonight with iron sights.
