I loaded my first rounds of 308 the other day. My first loads were with Varget, IMR 4895 and RL 15. I had loaded 5 shells each of 6 differant powder charges. ( say 40,40.3 ,40.6 so on) It seemed that my best accuracy came in at mid to mid high powder charges. I took 4 to 5 load sources, averaged a max and went down from that 6 times in .3 incraments. I will be trying some H4895,BL-C(2), H335 and 3031 next. I am just curious what your guys accuracy load is with the powders that I have listed. I know all rifles are diff even of the same model but what is your sweet load.

For 165 and 168gr bullets, 41.5gr IMR 4895 in a LC case with a Winchester primer. It works great out of M1 and M1A rifles.

I like AA2460. Nice load density, extremely accurate metering, very consistent over the screens... WW748 is damn hard to beat in my experience too.

Both work fantastic for me in .223 as well, if that might be a bonus.

It might help to know what rifle you're shooting.
I load my AR10B with:
168 gr Hornady BTHP.
41.3 gr Varget.

I also worked my loads starting at 39.4 until I reached my best shots at 100yds. Based on the type of gun, bolt or semi sort of dictates what your loads would be.

I use 44.1 grn Varget, Remington brass and CCI LR Primer.

68 grn Nosler Competition HPJBT

FN PBR XP wiith 20" barrel.

+1 "WW748 is damn hard to beat" I use 165gr. BTSP hornady #3045 good accurate hunting load.... I used to use 3031 was vary accurate load... but does not meter as well as 748.. with 748 i use mag primers... as it gets a wee bit cold up here..

44 grains of Reloder 15 with 165 grain Ballistic Tips (2,635 fps)
45.5 grains of Reloder 15 with 168 grain AMAX's (2,720 fps)

Loaded to 2.82 OAL, both of those will shoot .3 MOA out of my SPS Tactical.

44.5 grains RL-15, 2716 fps
44.9 grains Varget, 2689 fps

Both with 165 Sierra GameKing. OAL = 2.808

Either shoots sub-MOA. Rifle is a Tikka T3 Hunter.

Recently i have had good performance using Ramshot Tac in .308 Win with 147 gr Milsurp bullet at 2700 fps using CCi # 34 primer you can down load Ramshot data at their web site

Thanks much guys. To ar10 the rifle is a savage 10fcp. So far my best group was with IMR4895, 4 shots overlaping and 1 to the side about 1/2 inch. I believe I used 42.4grs. It's interesting to see how one charge is great in one rifle and not so good in another.

Any here use the Remington 91/2 large rifle primers for .308 handloads? What powder should I use?

I'm getting .5 moa at 100 yards with 42.5 grains IMR 4064 with fed brass, fed match primers and a 168 grain Sierra HPBT. My rifle is a Kimber 8400 advanced tactical.

You need to be very very careful about interpolating load info in the rifle cartridges. Each source uses a different brand of brass. So, you need to follow what brass you have with respect to data. NEVER USE DATA DEVELOPED say in WW brass in FED brass...you are begging for a big problem!

Has anyone said H335 yet?

That's what I use. Cheap, and accurate. I tried it head-to-head with Varget, and my H335 loads came out 'slightly' more accurate.

I was out fire forming some Hornady brass today in my PSS 308. I was using Benchmark powder. Using a medium load that worked pretty well in other brass, I used it with the new Hornady and was simply amazed at how well this powder works. Got me to thinking though I hardly ever see anyone sing many praises about it and now kind of wondering why that is.

Using Varget right now for 308, 30-06, 303 brit, 7.62x54R and 8mm Mauser...soon 7.5x55mm. I use BL-C2 for 223.

Light bullets shoot well also: 125 gr Nosler Ballistic tip boat tail over 48 grs Varget, CCI's 200 primers, Winchester brass, @3100 fps out of a 26" bbl. Ruger MKII VT, shot under an inch @ 100yds

I'm still in search of my "sweet spot", I am using Varget and H-4895, both have given very good results/performance. I started out with 44 grains of Varget, got 1.25" average over (5) 5 shot groups. Today, I'm headin' out to try 44.7 grains, see if my groups tighten up any.

My load with 42.3 grains of H-4895 printed (5) 5 shot groups between .75" and 1", so that's a good one.:) I'm using CCI primers, Remington brass and Nosler 168 gr HPBT's, which are 10 cents cheaper/bullet than Sierra. They perform just as good in my experience.

I could probably seat my bullets longer, but I'm getting good accuracy, so I don't feel the need. I'd prefer to stay within the loadbook spec's.

For me the goal is to make ammo that shoots as good as the best Match loads over the counter.

I'm getting there.

What I have found is that the Match loads aren't mild loads most are in fact near max but offer very small standard deviation numbers.

I'd love to know how Federal Gold Metal Match is made in the factory so well.

I've used TAC, Varget, Re-15, IMR-4320and AA-4350 in my CZ-550 Walnut Varmint. They all shoot good but this rifle doesn't seen too picky about powder and bullets. I wish CZ made this rifle in 6.5X55 Swede.
