I am getting a Savage 308 Hog Hunter and will also be reloading for it, my
question is this I have 748,760 and Benchmark powders on hand which of these
3 powders would be best to start load development with ?
Thanks

Looking at Hodgdon data for you, 748 will get higher velocity.
Benchmark would be worth trying if you think a SMALL improvement in accuracy is worth chasing.
760? No.

The 4895's will perform alot better in .308 than the powders you have listed. Varget would be another excellent choice.

Benchmark and 748 are on the fast side for .308, especially with heavier bullets.

I have gone a different path. I have a Howa .308 win. 22" 1:12 twist. I have very good results with Varget and 150gr and Bl-c2 for 165-168gr.
For a 20" 1:10 I would work with 748 first, just a hunch. And maybe the 760 will like the 165's ?

748 is a great powder for my .308. I've shot many of my best groups with it.

H4895 and RL-15 also work well. I usually use H4895 for two reasons. First, it can produce excellent accuracy, and second, because I want the option to make reduced loads, and that powder allows me to go down to as little as 60% of max loads.

My most accurate loads with H4895 have come with 37-39 grains of powder under 150 and 168-grain bullets. This is "only" about 2200-2300 fps. but they group very, very well and I can shoot all day without flinching.

While none of the above would be my first choice both Winchester 748 and Winchester 760 will work in 308. Both being ball powders I would use a LRM (Large Rifle Magnum) primer to assure good clean ignition. For the .308 Winchester there are just other powders I prefer like IMR-4895, IMR-4064, AA-2495 and several others.

Both 748 and 760 will work with bullets in the 150 to 168 grain range.

.308 powder

I know there many good powders for the .308 and I've try ed most of them.I started out in .308 with IMR 4064, used several others trying to better IMR 4064,but never could better it.4064 is my go to powder for several other rifles also,.270 .30-06 30-30,and .243.It works best in .308 for me and very good in my other rifles.Just scores a 8 pound jug for 189.00 bucks. hdbiker

Rl 15 gives me the best velocity in my bolt gun with 150g ttsx bullets for hunting. I want the velocity for a flat trajectory since my shot distance varies a lot.

4064, Varget, and RL15 are the 3 that I've used the most. I've gotten very good accuracy and speeds with all 3 with 150-180 gr bullets. 4895, and 3031, along with TAC have been used too, but much less.

Varget is my go-to powder, but I can be very happy with any of the 1st 3.

308 Hog Hunter Load

I use IR 4064, IMR-3031, and IMR - 4350

Great luck with all. Most recent success:

200gr Hornady ELD-X, 45.1gr IMR-4350, CCI LMRP, Average Velocity 2144, SD 47fps. 3/4" groupings at 100yds.

I lot of the accuracy is the bullets, they are amazing...

My favorites are IMR 4064 and IMR 4166. Love the 4166. Getting great accuracy and good velocity to boot. Use both with 178gr Hornady BTHP Match. Getting around 2700fps with the 178's and wonderful accuracy.

Another 4064 fan here.
I was chasing velocity in my work up for long range shooting.
I worked up loads with Varget, IMR8208XBR, 3031, Benchmark, both 4895 and a couple others I am forgetting, but could not beat the groups I was getting with 4064.
I used 168-175gr projectiles.
I will say, Benchmark and 168gr work well together, but did not get the velocity I was looking for.

I haven't found anything yet that will group well with Benchmark. That's .308 and .223

I'll keep trying until I run out of what I have. I was hopeful as I can get it fairly easily.

I love the Internet:

Q: I have Benchmark, 748 and 760 on hand. Which one should I use?

A: 4895, 4064, R15, Varget, 4350

Can't give a straight answer, can we? :D

For your 3 powders on hand, 748 is the most economical and generally a decent performer.
Winchester says they use it in their factory ammo for 308 Win. Can't be all bad.
The other choices in my Answer are more often used for maximum accuracy, but 748 is pretty good.
And you have it on hand.

I've used 760 and Benchmark, both shoot well enough for tin can fun
but 748 is better than the other two.

I have tried all the powders that have been mentioned,so far. I like 748 for 150gr. RL15 is a good performer, as is 2000MR. Seems like you can never go wrong with 4064 or 4895 in .30 caliber. 2000MR works pretty well with heavier than 150gr. loads in my two Savages.
