So I purchased the Hornady case gauge to determine how far I am currently seating off the lands. Looks like touching the lands I would be at 2.820, and I currently load at 2.805 COL. So, I'm right at .015 off the lands. I'm just curious if any closer would help or hurt? I'm loading at the bottom of load charts because it shoots sub MOA there, and it's out of a heavy barreled Savage Model 10 PC.....What say you fellow reloaders?

Every rifle is different and likes a different distance from the rifling. Mind you, if it's shooting sub-MOA, think Rule Number One. If it works don't fix it.

Yeah, i guess i truly only have 2 choices: try it or don't try it. But, to your point Sunray, i'm not sure how much i'm asking out of a factory rifle too. It does shoot good, even at extended ranges. But, i wasn't sure if others would have any experience to share with the .308 and what worked for them, or didn't work. Just basically throwing it out there to see what kind of feedback i get.......Thanks fellas.

I've got a very long throated Remmy 700 and I've found my best accuracy comes from loading as close to the lands as I can. Usually about .005-.010 off.

The closer you can get to the riflings the better accuracy you will get, however, the cartridge may get too long for the magazine. I load however to the grove ( counterlure ) in the bullet.

Unless in a revolver cartridge, I very rarely load to the cannelure of the bullet. It just never seems to work out for me. I usually find that loading close to the lands is the most desired first attempt at accuracy and it usually isn't at the cannelure.
